And I just read this thinking it was gonna be a quick questionWhy do folks ask if they can ask a quick question? What does the length of time it takes to ask a question have to do with anything? I get it at least daily.
Can I ask you a quick question?
You just did.
Can I ask another quick question?
You just did.
Okay, can I ask two quick questions?
Sure. What is the second one?
Are they asking because they think if they ask a slow question they won't get an answer? Why is it so frequent and why do folks do it?
Just ask the fucking question.
I don't know, that still took 7.5 million years to come up with.Quick answer: "42".
That's what I'd preemptively answer with when someone came into my lab for a "quick question".I don't know, that still took 7.5 million years to come up with.
Reset and see if it’s still doing itI get a lot of this working in IT:
I got an error and now my PC is slow.
What was the error?
I didn't write it down. Any idea how to fix that?

Yep - esp. if its a Windows box. Reboot it.Reset and see if it’s still doing it
r/linuxmasterraceYep - esp. if its a Windows box. Reboot it.
I probably spent 80% of my time cleaning out slow Windows machines so they'd run faster. Windows seldom/never does any garbage collection and slows down as a result. XP was notorious for crapping all over its registry.
Yea - as I've said before, "next time" I'm going back to Linux after a 20 year hiatus. I'm tired of Apple's bugs, decontenting, and overall stupidity. Microsoft - even on the rare occasions that they manage to get something right, there's still ain't nobody happy. Generally, just brain dead implementations of industry standards, add spyware and now they're following Apple down the decontenting "make my computer work like a smartphone" rabbit hole. Windows 7 was peak Windows, 8 was a fiasco, 10 was ugly as home made sin, but worked. 11 is another fiasco, and still has the Win 8 ugliness.r/linuxmasterrace
They're sticking with the "every other" one is good. 98, XP, 7, 10, ...Yea - as I've said before, "next time" I'm going back to Linux after a 20 year hiatus. yea - that's crap. I don't put up with ads in my operating system under ANY circumstances. More smartphone bullshit I'm sure. 11 is a particular fiasco because of the brainless TPM requirements - now M$ is getting into the Nanny State business just like Apple. They're sticking with the "every other" one is good. 98, XP, 7, 10, ...
But yeah, I tried to install 10 and 11 for fun... Found ads in the file browser. Glad I put that on a spare drive so I could just format it and move along.
Microsoft just "fixed" Windows 7 so that Outlook 2010 won't talk to my .msn mail account (since 1996). I called a friend who works for MS and he said they did it on purpose because Win7 is no longer supported, although it is still used by over 100 million people in the world. MS sees that as a huge market for 'Win whatever' and wants us to buy the latest version of smartphone windows. Linux is starting to look pretty good. (BTW, I would have to buy all new hardware to upgrade to the latest version of Win - something called "UEFI, Secure Boot".)Yea - as I've said before, "next time" I'm going back to Linux after a 20 year hiatus.
