What MPG are you getting?

5th gear is fun again.

99, 4.0, 5 speed, 4" lift, 33" tires. I average 16mpg, mostly interstate driving at 70 mph. I don't get much improvement if I keep it at 60, which is strange as heck to me.

Mine is the same way and i am confuzzled too. Up to 55mph keeps me in 15.5 mpg zone, after that it drops by 1ish mpg and stays the same till about 80mph, after that i get another 1ish mpg drop.
What even more interesting to me is that i outperfom a cruise control. Fluctuating by 5mph up and down in speed somehow is more efficient than keeping it steady.

Now that is interesting. I don't know how "intelligent" the cruise is but rough logic would lead you to think it's the less gas-thirsty option.

I haven't been able to figure out any way to improve the mileage through driving habits other than just being gentle on the pedal and not going too far over 70. TJs defy reason.

So far all highway some 55 some 65 and a little 69-70 I got 15.5. About the same as my 8,800 lb Superduty 4X4 diesel crew cab gets at 80 MPH  No worries though I didn't buy if for MPG and for long trips or city errands I have a TDI:)

😄 in a nutshell. I make frequent trips from south to up north, so i have nothing better to do but to experiment and keep track of little things like this for 18 hours. My logic is skeptical too, but if doing the same thing consistently produces the same results, who am i to question facts with my logic?

I have settled on a conclusion that below 50mph is on me, and at above speeds physics will do their thing.
My 6 speed has a grind between 1st and 2nd gear during normal stop and go traffic dynamic, but if i go easy on it and let it pop into a gear on its own, it will shift smoothly. I use it as a meter for my driving habits, seems to correlate with getting a better bang for a buck at the pump.

^ That was me at the pump during FL-TX move, realizing that a damn Uhaul i rented ... litteraly a box on the wheels... is nearly as efficient as my empty Jeep.

Any fellow nerds out there? The Fuelly app in conjunction with the Acar app lets you track your mileage and cost per mile. The Acar app lets you input the information from the pump on your phone and syncs it with Fuelly. And it's free.

Ignore the max and min, there were some missed fill-ups along the way that I haven't bothered to track down. I'm down to 14 mpg but I think that's due in part to failing O2 sensors. Should be back near your level soon.

Didn't add pics of mine but I did discover cars come in different colors

"Amazing that your Suburban does better than your TJ."

Ha, Me too. My old 2003 does too, especially if I can keep the 16 or so I get at 0 to 70mph up to the 18 or 19 it repeatably gets if I can stay between 90 and 105. Had a hard time believing it, but had opportunities to duplicate it many times.

Interesting thread I have read most of considering mileage rather than rock clearance but yes everyday life. Iffen some of those had done some math before making gear and tire changes they might have a better idea of what they are working with and what to expect. Manual transmissions are a little easier.

Take a gear number and multiply it by your drive gears ratio. 1st-2nd-3rd etc. That gives you a base ratio starting point. Yep then substitute what you are thinking about changing to. You can take that number of what change of gears will make your 5th gear what for your 4th gear ratio is now for example if you want.

If it matches close, drive in 4th as your last gear instead of 5th for a couple weeks and see how you like it. Consider your are taking off in 2nd instead of what your new 1st will be.

Tires are the same to do a calculation to get a feel of a major change. Take the percentage of circumference you are increasing and multiply that to subtract to your original gear ratio and it will give you an idea what to expect.

Yep, my virtually stock 98 6cy 5man, I am 4% overstock on my tire size circumference running equivalent to 28.5s but my gears still work. If I changed to 31s to gain 1 and 1/4 in clearance on the pumpkins, I would be at 7.3%. Yep, I would start to be in trouble for everyday driving with my gear ratio to stay in the lower part of the power band for decent mileage.

Virtually every trip I make has 8 miles of 45mph and then 60-120 miles at 60-70mph and then a little city of 35mps with stop lights. I average 16-17 and it is vary rare anyone is ahead of me off any stop light. To gain any performance I would pull the 5 speed out and put in a Muncie M-24 with a Hurst shifter to not spend 2-3 seconds between each gear for the syncro rings to drag and align and shift flat footed. haha

I agree that 10-11 mpg is not optimal unless you are running high rpm with a lot of parasitic engine drag to have your lower trans gears for rock crawling. I suspect other problems, possibly o2 sensors or trying to drive down the highway at 5000 rpm. Mine lives most of its life between 1700 and 2100 rpm in 5th gear with plenty of smooth torque. I do feel I have more of a "tractor motor" than some have described here of the 2.0s that need to be kept above 3000rpm to not be lugging the engine. I am at about 1900rpm in 5th at about 70mph if I remember correctly.

Amazing that your Suburban does better than your TJ.

Stock height and tires help. Neither is a commuter. The TJ is a toy. Short trips and off-road=worse mileage. It would probably avg 14 if I used it like a "normal" car. The burb is my truck and I only drive it when I need to haul big stuff or tow my boat. It'll average 16 as a daily driver, 18 if I take it easy. But I bet if I lifted it 7" and put 35s on it wouldn't do any better than the TJ.

The following are things that will effect gas mileage; driving as speeds above 60 mph, engine is operating below the recommended factory temperature, lower tire pressure, brake shoes dragging slightly, old O2 sensors are to name just a few of the more common ones.

My '01 4.0L 5 speed w/ 2" lift, 32's and 4.11s gets 18 mpg highway which is down from 20 mpg since I went to 4.11s (yes I calibrated the speedo), but I drive 70-75 mph on the highway instead of 60 which would be better when trying to squeeze out more MPG.

Hey I have a 2001 as well and I was wondering how your gas mileage is so high? I have a automatic with no lift and 31's??

To update my MPG since I was only at 2 fill-ups when I found this thread, I am now at 21 fill-ups on my 2000 5 speed stock height and 31's. My average over those 21 fill-ups is 14.7. I have a few that came out between 16 and 18, those were highway driving under 70 MPH. My city average seems to be between 13 and 15.

That's nearly identical to mine.
