6.1 LJR Build

Chattanooga

Was just wondering. My wife's family is from South Central Tennessee. Have made many trips there over the years. He cousin also built and owned an off-road park in Summertown TN called Wheeling in the Country, but sold it a few years ago.
Been to Chattanooga a couple of times, it's nice.

Man that looks great!

I'd still love to know what application they got the flywheel from, as well as the clutch kit. My guess is the 3/4 ton hemi, it seems to line up with the same number of teeth as the 3.9 dakota. Also, I would imagine they used the dakota starter?

If you have manufacturer name and part numbers, I would love this information as I am still collecting parts and this would save me a lot of time.

I know it is a full Luk clutch kit. As far as I know, it’s all the same front accessory’s including the starter. It also is the 3.9 Dakota bell housing. I’ll be over later this afternoon and can see if I can get a part number on the clutch kit.

That would be awesome. I've got the 3.9 bellhousing, 06 gas tank, cherokee manifolds, and the Hemi.

Anyway this is your thread, so again, this thing looks like its gonna come out awesome!

Motor is in! Cleaned up the engine bay before dropping it in. At this point it won’t need to come out again unless something were to come up along the way. Bell housing is mounted up on the AX15. After the first test fit, the gearshift arm is a little bit forward of where the hole is in the center console. They’ll have to make a small bracket to adjust for it, but it won’t be an issue. None of us remembered to find a fly by wire gas pedal so I’ll have to find one at a junkyard, but it shouldn’t be an issue. A little more wiring was done also. Once all the main parts are installed, things will appear to come to a halt since you won’t be able to see much getting done visually but they’ll be making all the AC lines and piping for everything. Dang near brought me to tears seeing the motor mounted up when I walked in!

Looks good! Have they figured out the gas pedal bracket? Teraflex discontinued theirs awhile back so I ended up making mine but still wondering if somebody else is making them.

Yes, that is true on full hard uptravel. I just don't plan on doing anything that extreme with mine.
A remote kit is something on my to add later list, unless they get bigger curbs at the Mall before then. For now just want to get some miles on it and do the shake down gremlin search.

I cannot agree with this one. It doesn’t take much to eat into that bumpstop travel. And 2” of Uptravel is EASILY seen as soon as pulling out of your garage … you will dink that filter! Best case you dent it, most likely you rupture it and make a mess, or worse if it goes undetected.

Love your combination! While LJ with a hemi… I have a while LJ, best case I’ll see a stroker. I love the Jeep straight 6 , but a hemi is down right exotic. Perhaps why Jeep charges 100k for one these days

That question is above my pay grade! I’m pretty certain they have. The one thing we all forgot to get was a fly by wire gas pedal but they haven't mentioned having to figure anything like that out.

Yeah. At this point it’s getting a remote mount.

Yeah man. I definitely wanted to keep it a manual. Losing the 6speed and going to the 5. I’ll change over to an 8speed auto when I do the 6.4 swap but that’ll be waaay down the road.

Couldn’t find the parts number. Still look g for it but it was a complete kit from Luk that included the flywheel.

So getting the trans and transfer case fitted up. Looks like the drive shafts will have to be adjusted a little but we were expecting that. Transmission ended up being in the perfect position so no need to make a bracket for the shifter arm. We will have to go to a different still shift cable for the 4wd selector. Just not enough room in the tunnel for everything to occupy the room it currently does. One of the pictures shows the alternator. Shaved the mounts down and used some smaller bolts so that it will be easier to replace when the time comes and to keep it from touching the frame. Intake should be back from powder coat tomorrow so we’ll see how that turned out. Decided to go ahead and change all the shot body mount bushings while we were under there. Other than that, coming along pretty nicely. Still on schedule to be done Tuesday-ish as long as nothing major comes up.

Sure is looking good. I'm super jacked that you are sticking with the standard since this was my plan all along as well and you just don't see many people do it this way. There is some concern about how well the AX15 will hold up, but like you I don't thrash my Jeep very hard so I think it will do just fine.

Thanks man. Iv been assured the AX15 would hold just fine as long as I’m not throwing the juice to it or putting a blower on it or anything. They've got a couple shop Jeeps running an AX15 that get beat on every weekend. No issues out of them so far.

A friend was running 700hp in his Supra through an asin R154, and drag slicks! The AX15 is an asin r series derivative. There are mods to make them survive, mainly a thrust washer inside. They’re strong :)

Awesome combo and great write up! Between Daubie and your builds right now, Im learning a ton on this swap! You’re lucky you got your Holley exhaust because they just discontinued it. You need to ask your buddy that works there what the deal with that is!
So if I follow correctly, with the Holley motor mounts and the new AX15 w/ 3.9 Dakota bellhousing, the shifter lines up perfectly in the original shifter hole? What shifter are you using?

Thanks for the updates and keep ‘em coming.

Thanks man. That’s crazy they discontinued it! No idea why they would. Shifter lines up perfect where it needed to with that combo but things are tight under the rubicon skid plate. Just using the shifter arm that came from Novak with the trans unless we need to do something else.

Not much to see today. Got everything straightened up around the transmission and where it needs to be. Tidying up the wiring harness and getting everything run where it needs to be. Once again…Hotwires does amazing work. Everything comes back looking brand new and labeled. Makes it so much easier to run. Also helps when the guy doing your swap is super picky and a perfectionist which I greatly appreciate! Stuck the Holley exhaust system in place today to make sure everything had enough room which it did. Still on track for middle of next week. Thankful at this point no real issues have popped up and we’re past a point where anything should have. Now just gotta hope the motor fires right up and won’t have any issues!
