What gas mileage are you guys getting?

@MikekiM

Frig I thought 15mpg was good for the little old engine😂 clearly I’m wrong

If I drive even the least bit spirited the mpg's plummet to the 12's. If I drive 'normal' I'll get pretty consistent 15's. Normal is shifting at 2800 or below, not lugging it, not trying to rip off the line. Basically, like an old man...

Great call, @B1Toad, on Imperial vs US gallons. I had forgotten that. According to this, the US has a more British gallon (Queen Anne) than the UK (Imperial).

Sorry, @maz, but the colonies all feel better knowing that you're getting the same lousy mileage as the rest of us. :p

That's ok if the engine wasn't so damn sweet I'd rip it out and put something else in.. 🤣

Just drove 1,000 miles in the last week and a half. 500 miles from SoCal to Bahia de Los Angeles (Baja California), rooftop tent, fully loaded jeep with tools, fridge/freezer, etc... while towing a boat (15ft inflatable, full of gear, with a 30HP outboard, on a galvanized boat trailer).

I'm quite happy with the 11.5MPG average considering how fully loaded I was. Had a bit of range anxiety on the trip back when I skipped the only gas station for 100 miles(Bahia San Luis Gonzaga) and decided to go from BdLA all the way to San Felipe on a single tank. I made it with two gallons to spare. Definitely helps keeping the speed under 60MPH.

I know this is an old thread ,but how are you guys getting such bad mileage from you Jeeps ? I have a TJ 4.0 3-speed auto and I'm averaging 17-20mpg around town on a good run 21mpg . I mean could it be the climate?

My TJ needed 12.5l/100km (18.8 mpg US) on average when it was completely stock. It has been now re-geared to 4.10 and has 31.7 in tyres. It guzzles 13.5l/100km (17.4 mpg US) away now. So, your mileage is perfectly in range; I have no idea why the US guys need so much. I guess it depends on how one puts the pedal to the metal.

Hope you had a great time, your picture makes me want to go soon. My son has a place on the beach in Peurto Lobos across the Sea of Cortez from the Baja. I need to do the Baja side, never been there. Did you take 2 passengers with you?

Interesting, I generally get decent mileage too on my mostly stock TJ and figured it must have been because of 3.07 gears and 29" tyres pumped right up for highway trips (I think that's only 10mm over stock? 235/75/r15). Did BJ do your gears?

The only time that I checked my mileage in my TJ was on an over 300 mile road trip and I got over 20MPG. That's with a 5.3 LS V8.

I typically don't care, as the Jeep's main purpose is SPG (smiles per gallon). I did check the mileage I'm getting now with the lift and 33's, and was surprised to be just above 16mpg.

I'm normally driving in western Maryland which is mostly mountains (aka hills to you western folks). If I set the cruise control at 65 MPH and downshift on the long hills, I get 15ish MPG. BTW, I have 160K on the motor.

Had an amazing time. Second time there this year, spent almost 2 weeks back in May, but didn't get to drive the Jeep as I was still having engine issues.

Only passenger was my dog. My parents and their friends each towed 30ish ft trailers.

Next time I'm hoping to bring a passenger and a second dog, I just have to rearrange the storage in the Jeep.
