Got an insane dealer quote yesterday to copy my SKIM enabled key, need recommendations

On a whim yesterday I stopped at a local Jeep dealer to ask their service department what it would cost to have a copy of my key made so I'd have a spare skim enabled key in case I ever lose the one I have or the chip craps out on me.

Anyway I was floored when they told me a key was $150 and having it programmed would be another $250 for a grand total of $400!?

So naturally I'm looking for advice from others who've recently replaced a key for more affordable options, help!

That’s how much the key for my JT was… and it does way more than just security! The JT has keyless start, proximity door locks, remote start…

Key and Programing was $150.00 at my local Jeep dealer (St. George, UT)
Had it done about 2 months ago $75.00 for the key and $75.00 to program.
they cut the key at the dealer. in and out in about 45 minutes.

You should be able to get one made at Lowe’s and program it yourself. I’ve done that with my other chip key on my GM vehicles. It was $50-80

Maybe I need to try another dealer then because that's in the realm of reality compared to what I was told.

Were they keys that you purchased right there at home Depot? Or did you bring the programmed blanks to be cut? Are you saying I can get a skim programmed key cut at home Depot?
They had the SKIM keys in stock. I don't know if all Home Depot stores have that ability but mine did.

I just paid a dealer 40 to have a skim key cut, I haven’t had it programmed yet because I couldn’t get the Jeep to the dealership. The parts guy said he thought it would be 180 to program. He gave me the PIN in case I wanted to try a mobile locksmith. I haven’t got that far yet, my old key still works if I get it just right. It’s so worn it goes in too far and I have to back it out a smidge.

I thought about adding SKIS but after reading about issues and hassle and the fact that some revisions of the Mopar keys are not known if they work or not I decided not to bother with the whole mess. Andy

If I didn’t have it I would do the ORO kill switch, but I would not consider disabling it.

Talk to a locksmith. My buddy owns his own locksmith company and can duplicate skim for less than $50.

There are a lot of Home Depot stores that use the programmed key cutters and cannot(will not) use customer supplied keys. On occasion I have found a HD store with the old key cutters that can still do customer supplied keys.

I didn't provide the new SKIM keys, Home Depot did and they cut and programmed them too.

Be careful copying a 20 something year old key:

That’s the key that’s been in my pocket vs the one the dealer cut from the vin. I thought I needed to replace the ignition cylinder again but the issue was the key
