I just joined Saturday= Wanted a Jeep since I was 15, 33 years later got one Friday, for free. Its an 02 X with 188k miles. Has some crustiness and what has been deduced as a wrist pin knock, very mild. I am keeping eyes open for a good or rebuildable 4.o, but wanted to check here to see if anyone could point me to some good online or print resources on the 4.0 engines?

Welcome to the forum, this place is very knowledgeable and im sure someone will point you to the right Direction... What are your plans with the jeep, since you have been wanting one for some time now.

The FSMs and parts books are available here under Resources.

I would guess cracked or broken piston skirt before wrist pin.

Also note that the valvetrain on 4.0s are noisy to start with. If you know someone else with a 4.0, compare.

Change the oil with a good 10W-30 or -40 and see what drains out of the pan, and if the noise changes.

I've got about 300K mi on my YJ 4.0 and 275K on my TJ, so they will run forever with proper maintenance.

Congrats on the new Jeep.

YouTube channel Just Dex It mostly covers Cherokees...XJs, ZJs...but has some great videos of rebuilding 4.0s on the cheap.

They don't need much to run.

to start- I just want to cruise some, but I am an Autobody tech by trade, and currently teaching it ( the Jeep was payment from a Mechanics instructor as trade for repainting a F150 Lightning!) so I plan to pop the tub off, blast and repair some rot on the frame and repaint it, BUT I want to get everything mechanically sound 1st

Looks great!

Now expect the floodgates of your wallet to open! I have a Jeep problem… I have 2 jeeps, and they both demand lots of attention and money…

Us too, have three of them. That doesn’t include the ones the two kids bought that end up here for repairs. Well actually the one has a bumper to bumper warranty so I tell her to take it in (so does my 2015). Right now the LJ is in the garage 3/4 of the way through installing a lift and new tie rod and drag link.

And I’m trying to convince wife she needs to trade her Prius for a 4xe… then I’ll have 2 and she’ll have 1…

That's my guess too.

exactly what my now, first Jeep had. I thought it was a lifter noise, so bought it. I was ready to go down the Jeep rabbit hole. Took off the oil pan and found all kinds of piston mcnuggets. The amazing thing was that even though the skirts were gone on one piston, it still ran amazing....with the noise. I have a friend who helped me do an engine out total rebuild. Can't wait to run it this Spring.
