Starting a thread after 5 years of ownership and lot of time here. Mainly because the upgrades have finally come to a point where it's getting more serious.

Basing the build off of what I have learned here around builds on 35s and out wheeling with friends who have tj's. This is my attempt at a rig that can do a lot well.

Plan when I picked this up was to build a wheeling rig that could do some harder trails and also take the family wheeling/camping. All while being streetable for ice cream runs and backroads with the family.

I started the hunt for a relatively well maintained lj in manual. Manual just because I like them for street driving and I'm OK with the compromises for now.

What I came from to what I went to.

Old toyota truck On 35s/37s with dual cases and few different bodies along the way.

First day home:
05 lj sport manual with 76k on it. Set up for beach cruising and flat towing. It originally came from Colorado so the frame and body have no rust. Soft top came with it too! Had some home made fenders that were done pretty well other than turn signal.

Steps, light bar, tires/wheels and bumper where the first thing to go.

Back to ravines, 35s, added a savvy body lift, morryde carrier, jcr sliders and trail gear rear bumper. Aussie locker up front.

Removed all the plasticdip on the front grill.

I added an m8000 that i found at a pick/pull with a winch mount, after a full rebuild of the winch and respray it was mounted with the warn raised mount. Bumper chopped too along with Toyota h4 kit!

I wheeled it like this for a while and quickly realized I needed to save up for gears and a new case.

Blew out a joint cap taking the kids on a New Years run. It was supposed to be a quick trip but the end of the trail was closed. So we had to double back and threw joint cap.

Picked up a decent deal on a 241a few years ago locally after considering this route for a 300 flip. Rebuilt it for piece of mind but it had a new chain already. Grabbed a lj Rubicon driveshaft from marketplace for now.

I always liked the mce fenders and didn't really love the homemade deals mine came with. Finally found some white fenders locally I could use for the switch along with clear jk signals. Mo betta!

After years of waiting for them to come back in stock, savvy listed lj sliders. I haven't seen them in stock since. Followed steps documented here on install by @mrblaine and @Irun Along with others. Very happy with the outcome.

Thermocure flush since the upper radiator tank cracked and started leaking. New mopar fan clutch, radiator, condensor and performance radiator heater core.

That pretty much brings us up to speed for the past 4 years. Having fun with it as a family fun rig but under geared and still some long term goals on the horizon.

Welcome! Nice LJ. There's a few of us on here that live in Virginia. I'm in the Hampton Roads area.

Current day situation is a bit different. After accumulating parts slowly and where deals can be had. Things are getting a bit more serious.

I have been gathering information from many on this forum, planning out a build a strategy for the goal of Dad wheeling rig and family camping setup.

Parts accumulation has gotten a bit out of hand....

Savvy arms, gas tank skid and uam
Arb lockers with chromo shafts, 30 and 35 spline
Hpd30
Iron Rock lower mounts
Currie 4inch springs, steering, bump stops and trac bars.
16" black magic brake kit and tie rod
Rms with mopar oil pan and rms gaskets.
Felpro valve cover gasket and mopar crank vents.

savvy crossmember and gas tank skid are in. My shifter is very close to the radio so will need to address that.

Starting on the regear, slow and steady between work and family obligations.

New spicer ball joints, axle cleaned and prepped.

I was able to throw the ring gear on at lunch today so I can get started on shims and dialing it in.

Finally out of the Shadows with your build. Looks Good!

I was looking at your pic showing the difference between the Savvy and JCR sliders...something look "off" on your JCR...Like it got cut and someone extended a tab out to pick up the torque box?

Thanks!

I think it's just the shadows and I may have snapped this pick without any preload or bolts in. I know that small plate they come with isn't quite thick enough. What you did to yours really improves the design.

What I noticed almost immediately was the weight savings. It made installation of the Savvy sliders much easier for a solo job.

Starting to run some patterns. This is stock pinion depth shim and about .007 on backlash on every pattern

A little deep, stock shim and new baffle. .074 total. .007 backlash

1000002987.jpg

1000002988.jpg

.055 stock shim. Too shallow. Bracket established. .008 backlash

1000002989.jpg

1000002990.jpg

.061 total stack. Still shallow.
1000002992.jpg

1000002993.jpg

.069 shim stack. .007 backlash

Getting closer. I will mess with it a bit more but getting close here.

Any thoughts on this pattern? @hosejockey61 , @Blackjack ? Trying to decide between the three below. All about thousandth from each other. Or if you like the .069 stack above.

Thanks!

.066 stack, .007 backlash

1000003024.jpg

I ran this right before.
.065 stack, .008 backlash

1000003016.jpg

1000003018.jpg

.067 stack with a tight .007 backlash

I like the first set of pics (0.066” shim, 0.007” B/L)

Thanks Mike! I was leaning towards the first one and was just going to post the first 2. Then I saw I could split the difference with a shim combo. Figured why not but then I figured I would poll the audience on this.

I would stick closer to the .069 but try opening the backlash a touch if you can.

Thanks! I'll give it a try see what shims will allow. I have a bunch of shims but since this is a 30 spline locker I'm limited to what ARB provides. I ran the other pattern options to see if I could dial it in any more. I knew the .069 was close!

Thank you gentlemen. Back at .069 with about .008 to .009 backlash. Shims for the carrier a bit limited with only being able to use arb's shims. Backlash adjustments are either in spec or just above .010 or below .05

1000003033.jpg

1000003032.jpg

Also ran a .068 with .009" backlash.

Splitting hairs at this point. I would run the .069 as my personal preference is to run closer to the deep side if the pattern allows it. And as long as your backlash is in the .007- .010 range that is all that matters.

I felt like once I crept over .070 it got too deep. My available shims for the carrier kept my backlash in the .007 range or over .10.

Thanks for all the help! I'll button this up this weekend hopefully.

Finally found time to finish up the front axle. Just need to test for leak but feels good to have final bearings, backlash and pinion preload all with spec and the same as my final set up run.

I bought these lockers used but NIB. I I noticed someone cut the copper line shorter or this older locker had a short line. Either way, made it work.
