Ticking time bomb?

Wait...WHAT?

And look at this..."retired to more relaxed pastures....bye." Last post Apr 5.

Well, I wasn't going to derail this thread, but that's already happened, so I too am curious about Jerry.

LOL, yeah, sorry, OP.

I'd say Dana 44 and Super35 are about equal in strength/cost. Personally, I like the idea of running what you have, and upgrading the internals, but then again the Dana 44 has a big following by the aftermarket, and if it's made for a TJ, all you'd need to do is rebuild it, swap it in and source a Dana 44 to 231 driveshaft (since I think the Dana 44 driveshaft would be a different length, right? Maybe/maybe not)

doing the Dana 44 would allow you to run what you have for now, until it blows up, and take your time on the Dana 44.

I think he was tired of all the criticism he got for repeating mantra. I really don't know though. That's just the vibe I picked up the last year or so.

Well that is sad. This forum does have some toxic elements and cases of people piling on to others. I hope @Chris can convince him to come back as that is a big loss IMO. Andy

The Dana 44 nose and pinion as about 1-1.5" longer than a Dana 35. If one lifts the rig it is conceivable to use the Dana 35 shaft since you've slightly lengthened the distance between the pinion and TCase output.

If you're serious, i felt the same way. :( Big bummer.

His posts were a big part of us deciding on the rig we ended up getting a few months ago.

Totally serious. It's sad that, it seems like, inexperienced folks (myself often among them) come and spout carp, then when they're corrected by experienced folks, they hissy out. If, indeed, that's what happened. I'm stupid and I often tire of more extreme versions of stupidity

This was more of a stubborn mule episode

So I’m by no means an expert, as I’m a green hand to the Jeep platform. However I too have been doing a lot of research on the S35 and Dana 44 comparison. What I’ve come to the conclusion of, is, it depends on your intended purpose. So, since I’ll never intentionally going rock climbing, and I’m more of a “slow technical approach” wheeler as opposed to a “hold muh beer and giv’er da beans” wheeler. I’ll be doing an upgraded 35. I was lucky enough to source a Eaton Truetrac from a fellow member for a song and plan to use the Revolution Gear 27 spline chrome moly axles. This should be plenty for the wheeling I plan to do with the Jeep.

I am planning on upgrading to a S35 with an Eaton elocker and 5.13 gearing. That was Jerry Bransford's recommendation. He said the S35 can go anywhere the Dana 44 can.

While that sounds like a good plan to beef up your Dana 35 for your intended use, that is not a super 35. A super 35 includes 30 spline axles with a larger diameter than stock axles. It's important to remember that the stock axles are a weak point when subjected to larger tires and a locker, as that combination puts the axles under a considerable stress and higher loads than a stock setup. A gear driven limited slip such as you're planning to use doesn't put the same stress on the axles, and the aftermarket 1541H axles will be stronger than stock as well.

For anyone who doubts the strength of an actual super 35 setup, please see starkey480's build thread here to see some of the terrain he tackles with that setup.

I updated my post to correct my wording. I forgot the S35 calls for the 30 spline/locker combo and not just upgraded axles. Good catch.

Who was the mule? Jerry or someone else?

I don't know Jerry except by what he said here, but I'd guess that he got tired of people who had opinions not based on experience trying to tell him he was wrong when he'd BTDT long before they had a Jeep. Some of them bringing experience from other types of motoring, such as hot rodding. Much of which is not compatible with our Jeeps.

You would guess wrong.

Since we're already off the rails here.

No, no it is not. Did I mention that I broke my 35 and now have a Super35. :sneaky:
