Operation Phoenix

Well...waited long enough for Skyjacker and ordered a replacement shock on Amazon for $60. Skyjacker support just can't get a shock and they're on backorder on their website.

So it arrived today and man I've never failed so hard at installing a shock. Five minute job turned into two hours. Didn't bother to pull it into my half finished shop and just tried stabbing it in on the gravel. Took a lot of tools and patience. Wondering if the new Savvy control arms have something to do with it.

Also noticed the new driver side sits a little lower than passenger...so that's odd. But only cycled them three times by hand and haven't driven the Jeep yet...but ride height is set by springs. Perhaps these used Currie springs that were used once or twice and put back in the original boxes sat on a Jeep for a dozen years and sagged out. Hmm. Only seems like an inch or less. Something to watch and to keep me from sleeping at night.

Time for a test ride. And I need to set bump stops. And outboard my shock mounts and get Fox 2.0s.

So where are we... alternator died last week... apparently I broke the frame in half according to our local auto electric shop. New one installed. Contemplating a dual battery tray and setup.

Meanwhile setting bump stops. Decided to hose the rear drums off with some paint...my carefully calibrated biceps noticed a weight difference...noticed one is a Mopar and other is who knows.

Three pounds difference. Hmm.

Might be time for a BMB set.

Man the way you use winches you should consider a hydraulic and or pto winch! Way closer to 100% duty cycle than electric

Agreed...but...so AX-15 doesn't support a PTO, right? And I doubt I could get sufficient volume or flow from a power steering pump. I could install a separate electric hydraulic pump or even a gas engine driven pump...but cost, size, packaging etc.

I could LS swap the Jeep...I think there are some PTO transmissions that would bolt to an LS.

I've learned that I don't kill winches when I get down to the last wrap or two on the drum and use recovery rings liberally and often and frequently.

So I did a thing...removed the Warn swing out tire carrier. Replaced it with Morryde heavy duty hinges and a Rugged Ridge spare tire carrier. I modified my license plate bracket to hold my pod light ala brake and reverse...love this spot so much more because it doesn't glare through the rear window. Torched a hole in the carrier to route wiring.

Spare tire removal is basically the same as before...1/4 hex key...remove license plate bolts, then two bolts behind it...unplug the pod light and remove the spare. Easy. Might even mount a hex wrench somewhere.

Replaced it with...and a Extreme Terrain spare tire carrier.

I'm curious what spare tire carrier that is. I just looked at the Extreme Terrain web site, and I couldn't find one with their branding. I have one that I like (Hyline Offroad), but it's no longer made, so I can't recommend it to anyone now. Always on the lookout for new stuff!

Yeah, but my mod list is very, very long, and I always prefer buying simple things like a tire carrier to leave the fab work for things I can't buy. However, with the demise of the Hyline carrier, I, too, would be fabbing something (probably mod an OEM carrier). Sadly, we TJ owners are a dying breed, and our volume isn't squat for the big guys.

Ok... pulled off the beach with a rod end tap tappety tapping the girdle. Good oil pressure. Got a car wash and took off the sand and oil...then dropped the oil pan in the Napa parking lot...super glad I put a v band clamp just forward of the skid plate. 2 hours apart and back together again... pulled the girdle and beat the tick out of it... healthy witness mark on it. Running good on fresh oil and a new filter.
