How many no what a power take off is?

When I was in my 20's I worked for a guy that had an old surplus deuce and half with PTOs front and back. He always said it was six wheel drive. We used to drive it up into the Dragoons to his mining claim up there. We named her "Ugly Dottie" and painted it on her freehand.

Before the Wagoneer arrived, buying a 4-wheel drive vehicle meant accepting a spine rattling commute inside a bare metal box. If you wanted to leave the pavement, you basically had to drive a tractor.

Kaiser Jeep changed the automotive landscape by blending backcountry capability with neighborhood comfort. For the 1965 model year they gave their flagship station wagon exactly what it had been missing by introducing the 327 cubic inch Vigilante V8. Generating 250 horsepower, this new engine provided the everyday highway cruising speed that modern families demanded.

Industrial designer Brooks Stevens wrapped the rugged axles in a handsome body that looked entirely respectable parked at the grocery store. Inside the cabin buyers found options that were completely foreign to utility vehicles at the time. You could order an automatic transmission, power steering and factory air conditioning.

This pioneer completely erased the idea that exploring dirt trails required suffering through a miserable ride.

1977 OPEN-AIR TRAIL BRAWL: SCOUT II TRAVELER VS. CJ-7 GOLDEN EAGLE
🌲

🔥

In 1977, four-wheel drive wasn't a fashion accessory with heated seats and touchscreens. It meant manual locking hubs, steel dashboard knobs, and hosing out the floorboards after a weekend in the mud.

Two completely different schools of American trail engineering squared off:

🔹
1977 International Scout II Traveler:
Tractor-tough utility from the makers of heavy farm machinery. Built with heavy-gauge American steel and an extended 118-inch wheelbase for extra cargo and high-speed stability. Under the hood sat the industrial 345 Comanche V8—a slow-revving, overbuilt iron lump that delivered 290 lb-ft of brute torque at barely 2,000 RPM through a cast-iron Dana 20 transfer case.

🔹
1977 Jeep CJ-7 Golden Eagle:
The agile desert runner that captured American pop culture. Stretched over the older CJ-5 to finally fit an automatic transmission or the legendary heavy-duty manuals, while rocking iconic gold hood decals and Levi's denim interior trim. Armed with the lightweight AMC 304 V8 and weighing over 1,000 lbs less than the Scout, it skipped over sand dunes and boulder fields where heavier trucks sank.

International gave you a tractor dressed as an SUV; Jeep gave you an open-air mountain goat with pure attitude.

44s, a Hellcat and a severely undercut ledge. What could go wrong?
One of our customers was working his way up Trail 15 at Windrock on 44-inch tires and beadlocks when he hit the final ledge with the Hellcat wide open.
The rear tire slammed into the lower, severely undercut ledge and launched the Jeep straight up. From what we could tell, the impact appears to have pulled the tire away from the bead. When the Jeep came back down, the tire went flat.
Surprisingly, the tire itself wasn’t cut.

Sometimes horsepower gets you up the ledge. Sometimes it just makes the video better.
