Black Magic Brakes Big Brake Kit Install and Review

Somewhere in the 15-20yr range on the BMB and it's by far the best thing I've done to the Jeep. My brakes were in the dangerous category and I believe I was only on 32's at the time. Definitely no larger than 33's. They would just roll if you stood on the pedal. It's a must have

Awesome write-up!
One question - Looking at the stock and BMB knuckles side by side, it looks like the steering arm is a bit shorter on the BMB knuckle. I suspect this is just due to the angle of the photo? Otherwise this seems like it could result in some reduction in steering leverage?

The knuckle was modeled 3 different ways. Scanning an OEM knuckle, using the SEMA drawings (which have an error), and then actually measuring common points against several new OEM knuckles. The distance from the center of the hole in the steering arm to the center of the unit bearing hole does not vary more than a few thou. They are ridiculously difficult to get close and we work very hard to keep them close.

It's got to be the angle of the photo, then. Thanks for confirming.

...

One of the clues to the BMB steering arms being the same as factory is that no one is making any mention of needing to repackage the steering links and track bar to prevent them from colliding.

I've been using the BMB pads with impressive results for years - next brake job will consist of the Big Brake upgrade.
I need to make a better photo that shows how they compare. This one is out of focus but done in a hurry to send to a shop that was blaming us for some axle issues.

True, and also no mention of interference with the diff cover, but hey, just wanted to confirm due to the photo angle.
Yeah, but think about it from the other way. What reason would I or anyone building something like this from scratch have to change the fundamentals without advertising it as a feature or warnings about altered functions?

If I change it, then I'm in the steering business and I want nothing to do with being in the steering business. It is already painful enough trying to stay ahead of all the differences that we deal with for the hydro assist installs. Building a steering kit with a high steer knuckle and then trying to solve all the issues that would arise because no one wants to use it the way I designed it would be a massive time suck I just won't deal with.

But if you were in the steering business then you could get all the calls about death wobble. 😂

Calm down. This is a good teaching moment that extends beyond just a brake kit.
Did someone confuse facts with being irritated and delete a reply? I am 100% fully gruntled and if I can't easily defend my quality and manufacturing methods, I shouldn't be doing it. I truly do not mind explaining how we get from point A to point B when it comes to a product.

No, I deleted my posts because I felt like I was steering away from Mike's excellent thread. Your quotes and responses were insightful.

Great respect for BMB products.
