What did you do to your TJ today?

Oh the suspense.
I broke the display on my uniden though.
I uhm. Tried just shoving them both in there without trimming the inside.
Lesson learned.

Installed the Savvy cable shifter. The only problem I encountered was getting the (Savvy also) engine skid off right at the beginning. Several of the bolts I used to attach the back end of the skid to the shovel had frozen in place and I had to drill them out. Not a lot of fun while laying on my back. Aside from that the shovel and the factory linkage came out easily and the new cable and brackets went in just as easily. Took about 3 hours for me, in my untrained, ham-handed fashion, to do the install, about 45 minutes of which was wasted drilling out those pesky engine skid bolts. I elected not to remove the front drive shaft, which made inserting the clevis pin into the transfer case shift lever a little more difficult than it needed to be, but it wasn't really an issue. The only adjustments I needed to do were on the cable ends and went very quickly. I'm very happy with the ease with which I can shift between all the positions on the transfer case. I must confess to spending several hours on local trails making absolutely certain that it really was that easy and smooth. In fact, I may have to go out again tomorrow - just to double check everything...

Only a couple of pictures of the installed brackets and cable ends. The clevis goes on the transfer case shift lever. You can see how little room there is to insert the clevis pin with the drive shaft installed. Tight, but doable.

The upper end was much easier.

Had issues with 4wd popping out of 4low.
Figured I needed to do some more adjusting on the savvy cable shifter. I spent a half hour tweaking it. One issue I see is the plate that bolts to the body doesnt point to well to the shifter. There is a slight bend which seems to cause it to bind some. Not sure if what to do about it but made some adjustments so will try it for awhile and see if there are any issues with it. Should have taken a pic.

Before, during and after.

First time I have put a soft top on so am pretty excited about it, bought it with the bestop sale a couple months ago.

Built the dolly for storage with my buddy friday night and swapped out the hard top for the soft top this afternoon. Got my first sunburn of the year and drank some beers was a good day.

Also my wife came out towards the end to help me. She has never helped me with anything on the jeep so that was pretty cool.

Initial plan coming into the weekend was to change the oil for the engine, transfer case, transmission, differentials, and swap out the dropped pitman arm. I've been putting it off ever since I bought the LJ 6 months back. I immediately ran into problems with the first two I wanted to do (transfer case + transmission)
  1. Transfer case: Cleaned the area, took out fill plug and then noticed the drain plug had been stripped . Gotta find a fix for this later. Fluid change postponed.

  2. NSG370: Ordered Royal Purple Synchromax for pickup from Pep Boys. Pick up confirmed and when I arrived to get it, the tire shop rep told me the store side of things has been closed for the past 4 weeks . No other store had any nearby for the NSG370, so I took the opportunity to just order Redline MTL online. Postponed as well.
  3. Differentials: No issues
  4. Engine: No issues
  5. Pitman arm: Oreilly's rental tool was too small to wrap around the arm. A heavy duty one from AutoZone took it out easily. Had to center the steering wheel afterwards. Glad to finally get rid of the dropped fellow below

  6. Tires: FedEx surprisingly delivered my Falken Rubitrek A/T tires today (32x11.5R15). Hope to get them installed this week.

We finally had great weather this weekend, it got into the 70’s for the first time since October! So, I spent the entire weekend knocking all the rust off using a needle scaler and wire brush, degreasing and prepping the Jeep for POR15. I’m really not that old at all but crawling around all weekend on the concrete sure takes a toll on your body! I’ve got anti-fatigue mats to help ease the abuse but, I’m sore all over! Thankfully t’s all done and I can put the skid plate back on tomorrow after it’s all dry. our good weather was only temporary because it’s going back i to the 40’s and 50’s with a chance of snow next weekend...WTF!!

Painted my Ranchos to match my new wheels...for whatever that's worth, no pics, but my wife asked me today if she could get a new laptop...WTF??!! She never asks for anything, just does it! She also apparently hasn't seen the CC bill for Jeep parts! "Sure Babe, get the best one you can afford, whatever you want!"
She drove the TJ yesterday for the first time since I got it last October, loved it...and didn't hit anything (we have a steep drive w/ a guardrail, she managed to hit it the first time she drove my BMW)...

That looks great, what kind of prep work is involved?

I installed a Gentex 261 auto dimming mirror with temp and compass. I love it but it took over two hours to run the wires through the windshield frame. I might have gotten carried away trying to hide the bottom hole and it was hard to thread up with bailing wire in 94 deg heat. Then I found that I need a different metal mount on the windshield. It holds but you can't tighten it without it popping off. Does anyone know if there is an adapter? My searches on Google turned up empty.

Not sure about an adapter, but mine took me maybe 30 minutes tops to install.

Of course I'm lucky. On the 03-06 TJ models, they have plastic trim pieces around the windshield frame, so all you have to do is hide the wiring behind the plastic trim, which is how it comes from the factory ;)

Is your mirror mount on the windshield plastic? If that's the case, I think the only real fix is to replace the plastic one with a metal one.

We had the windshield in one of my sons trucks replaced several years ago and they put a plastic mount in instead of a metal one and his mirror always seemed a little loose and vibrated some. Every time we tried tightening it, it would pop off. He moved away shortly after and I don't think he ever did anything else with it.
