Harbor Freight jack stand recall

The recall includes a 20% coupon with NO restrictions. The normal 20% coupons have restrictions for jacks, tool boxes etc.

I have two sets of the 3-tons, purchased two years apart. One set is covered under recall, one is not. The jack stands look, operate and feel identical. So I wonder what exactly is wrong with the one under recall v the one not.

Is it just me or is it funny that they discretely mention buying more jack stands from them in the SAME message telling you that the other ones got recalled for a serious safety issue?

If anything the updated jack stands they're replacing them with will have undergone an extra-rigorous safety check and very possibly now the safest/best available.

There's a famous pilot by the name of Bob Hoover. His airplane was accidentally filled with the wrong aviation fuel and as he was lifting off the runway, both engines stopped and he barely got it stopped before the end of the runway. They towed it back, figured out the cause of the engine failure, then Bob asked why it was taking so long to get it refueled so he could take off again. They told him they were looking for someone else to refuel his airplane. Bob told them to absolutely use the same guy that filled his airplane with the wrong fuel before. He explained that guy will never make that mistake again but someone else might. He always asked for that same refueler whenever he was back at that airport. True story.

There's very often a big advantage to having had some sort of a previous problem as it's unlikely to happen in the same way again.

To be fair, we are talking about Harbor Freight here. 😂
Within reason, that size of a corporation probably came down like stink on doo-doo on their jackstand manufacturer. I'd have no problem whatsoever buying and using whatever replaced that recalled jack stand.

The coupon attached lists restrictuons but the email says it can be used without restrictions in person in the store.
I just received the email today. They must have changed the coupon. It now reads:
Harbor Freight Tools is providing a 20% one-time use coupon; see bottom of this notification. This coupon may be used toward the purchase of new jack stands, or toward the purchase of any other item in the store not subject to the coupon limitations.
The limitations are unfortunately the same as any other 20% off coupons. Still not a big deal but it would have been nice to score 20% off a new tool cabinet.

Wonder if they ‘must be’ the model numbers they posted In the recall to do the exchange...Id image, yes. Will have to Just call in the AM to inquire.

I think I initially read it wrong. Reading it again, it does seem its the same 20% off with restrictions like always available.

There is much conjecture in this thread about the reasons for the recall, however the actual reasons are clearly documented in the NHTSA Safety Recall Reports for the 3-ton and 6-ton jack stands. The relevant text is in bold:

3-Ton
After ongoing quality testing, inspection and assurance reviews of 3 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands manufactured by Jiaxing Golden Roc Tools Co., Ltd (exported by Shanghai Shen Da Import and Export Co Ltd.), it was determined that product quality was inconsistent due to aging of the tooling and inconsistent location indexing of the pawl armature hole. All jack stands imported from this manufacturer as part number 61196 and 56371 are included in the recall population. Although we believe this issue arose in more recent production batches, because we are not able confirm that earlier production units do not have this issue, out of an abundance of caution we are recalling all units prior to the recall date.

6-Ton
After ongoing quality testing, inspection and assurance reviews of 6 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands manufactured by Jiaxing Golden Roc Tools Co., Ltd (exported by Shanghai Shen Da Import and Export Co Ltd.), it was determined that product quality had become inconsistent due to aging of the tooling. All jack stands imported from the manufacturer as part number 61197 are included in the recall population. Although we believe this issue arose in more recent production batches, because we are not able confirm that earlier production units do not have this issue, out of an abundance of caution we are recalling all units prior to the recall date.

I was going to return my HF 6-ton jack stands that have lost their labels, but I have owned them since 2013, about the same time as the beginning of the production run of the recalled units rather than toward the end, so odds are that mine do not suffer from the results of aged tooling and there is at least a 50/50 chance mine were manufactured by a different company than the recalled units. The teeth on mine look fine so I've decided to keep them.

My HF 3-ton jack stands are only a year old, are clearly labeled with the part numbers of the recalled units and were manufactured right in the middle of the suspect production period, so I'm returning them.

I guess I lucked out. I bought the 6 tons a year ago.

Just received a product recall for 3 ton and 6 ton jack stands, they claim they will retract under load. That’s comforting ! My kids bought them for me and I didn’t have the heart to tell them that I would never use them. If you have these items, return to store or dump em.

Here's a thought: would it be possible to just drill a hole through this piece of junk to turn it into a pin-type stand? How much distance between holes in the arm to have enough bearing material?
