How much lube is too much in Dana 35?

Below is a pic of my Dana 35 rear end and custom cover, (not sure what brand or who put it on, some PO). I believe the top hole is the fill hole. I believe the lower Allen bolt is the "full" or inspection hole. However when I take that bolt out, lub comes out like crazy. I worry that means it is over filled. I am having some noise coming from the rear end and I do not know what the damage or harm is for an overfilled Dana 35 pumpkin. Can any one help with info.

That is a cool cover.

It sounds like someone overfilled it you need to pull the plug and let it level out.

If you've got a noise too much fluid likely didn't do it... And if you got a good gear shop I would get that checked out because it could be something as simple as a loose pinion.... Sometimes a little prevention now can save a lot of cost later.

Overfilling it won't cause a problem like it can with the engine. About the most it might do is let the gear lube leak out an axle tube a little more easily.

The diff will spit out what it doesn't want through the breather vent.

With a custom cover I still think you are to fill with factory specified amount.
The official fill capacity of the Dana 35 is 3.5 pts. or 1.75 quarts. Even with a slight volume different due to a custom cover I would just pour in 1 3/4 quarts, maybe an RCH more for a larger capacity cover, and call it a day.
