One of the things I like about new vehicles is that the center console has a two layered lid. You open up the very top for things you get to often. Then you open the whole lid to access the bottomless pit of crap that your sifting through to get to the thing that’s always the bottom of the bottomless pit.
Does anybody know if the aftermarket had come up with anything? Anybody have any ideas?

I think the consoles with the factory subwoofer had tray on top, but that’s all it was. There was no storage under it as the subwoofer took up most of the space. Maybe someone that has the OEM subwoofer can confirm.

You’re best bet may be to get a small plastic container that will securely close and keep your little items in it on top of the other stuff in there. I keep saying I’m going to do this but always forget about it until it’s 4am and I can’t sleep and my mind is wandering.

I'll try to remember to measure both the console lid in the TJ vs JT. That lid has the two compartments, but the top compartment is only about 2 inches deep...

If you could make something that is also padded on top, that would be nice. The trouble is not making it too tall.

I've seen some aftermarket consoles that look nice like the Tuffy.

Good post ....it has the volume...but it’s a pit. It’s amazing what all will go in one. What you need is at the bottom invariably. Such a tight cockpit.

I have the factory subwoofer and it has the bottomless pit, with a couple little coin shelves. 2005, not sure about other years.

Ford escapes have the two layer armrests, not sure how close to the same size they are though.

I have the subwoofer in my 06R and it has a tiny bit of space for a few (cassette? CD?) Items. But starting empty I can fit a small tape measure, lug nut key, fingernail clippers, a few zip ties, and a couple spare emergency face masks. And that's all. Are they that different between years that you have so much room in yours? I assumed toe 05 was the same as the 06. Wonder if they could be swapped? I could use a 'bottomless pit' console!

Always used to crack up sometimes when i'm buzzing around town steering, shifting, working the clutch and gas all while digging around for something i'm looking for at the bottom of my console. Looks like i'm swatting flies and putting out fires at the same time.

I'm with you... I can't see how I could possibly put enough in there that stuff is hard to find.

No, I'm serious. I have practically no room in the center console. It can fit like 8 cd's or 6 cassettes. And that's it. There is no space below. And that tray can only be removed with a sawsall. The sub takes up everything beneath it.
If a center console with woofer from another year has so much more room, I would love to swap it in.

Exactly! Drives me nuts because I’ll fart around rummaging through all the crap only to get frustrated and start pulling everything out.

Prior to '03, the center console did not have a subwoofer and was a large cavity to the bottom. When they introduced the subwoofer, they changed the console. My original 98 came with the bottomless pit but I swapped out a newer one and replaced the subwoofer with a BT8 from SoundOrdnance.

I'm assuming the OP has a console without the subwoofer or a early version.

No, Darkwing said his 05 with subwoofer had a removable tray with a huge storage below it. That is whom I am asking. I had thought that all the center consoles with the sub had just a small space like mine. Hoping for some pics from Darkwing so I know what to look for to swap out with what I have.
