Jeep Wrangler TJ won't start? Read this!

Ah ha.... it was the ignition starter switch which has a actuator pin that can fail, or in my case, the alloy casting of the switch itself cracked and thus prevented the pin from doing it's job to enable the switch. This component is easy to replace, in line with the ignition key mechanism.

I'll check that. Ignition has always felt a bit loose.

Yep, voltage checks out. Full charge. Battery is about 3mos old. Thanks

Were you able to check voltage drop as you tried to crank? If voltage was good at that point I would lean to the starter being bad.

So, I changed the starter (it was under warranty), changed the relay, and the ignition switch. Checked the voltage, and as many wires as i could. Can't work on it Saturday , but will give it another shot Sunday. If not then I'll have her towed to the mechanic. Bummed.

Some one mentioned it earlier but my no start problem was faulty clutch on clutch pedal. Pulled the fuse to override it and starts every time now. Just something to keep in mind for others who will see this post.

What did you do??? You pulled a fuse, okay, but which fuse? The clutch fuse? Never heared about that. Can you give ne more Infos? Thanks

It's been awhile since I pulled it but I think I pulled #19 fuse and put it in the #20 slot. It's a 20amp fuse I believe. I have an 04 by the way. May be different depending on year.

I have 2008 Jeep Wrangler and recently, it has been having a hard time starting. Initially, I thought maybe it was the key or the key cylinder, but now I'm not so sure.
When I turn the key, all the dash comes on, my radio comes on, the heat etc. comes on, but it just won't go over. It doesn't crank or anything. Sometimes I have to just sit in the drive way and turn the key over and over again and it will eventually start. BUT sometime, it will start without a problem (WHEN I BRING IT TO THE MECHANIC ESPECIALLY)
It won't do it when I brought it in so they told me to come back. But I feel like it's getting worse.
The mechanic had said he checked the key, cylinder, and starter and it's fine. He needs to see it when it's not starting...
Can someone give me an idea of what it could be?

I'm not sure we'll be as much help here, since this is a TJ forum, and you have a JK. I'm not saying we can't help, I'm just saying that most of us here aren't familiar with JKs.

To me, it sounds like your ignition switch is faulty.

I'm not hearing my fuel pump turn on when turning key. But when i put a jumper wire where the relay is it turns on. What could this mean? I'm having the crank but won't start problem

My issue is that I can't even turn the key. Yesterday or the day before that, I noticed a slight bit of "resistance" when I turned the key to start the Jeep. I didn't pay much attention to that, but today was a work day, and when I went into my Jeep with the outside temp of 11, I was pretty frustrated when I put the key in the ignition and it wouldn't budge. No amount of jiggling the steering wheel will solve the problem, so I definitely knew it wasn't that. I know the battery is fine because I can start it up with the remote start and it fires right up. I had to Uber to work today and that wasn't a cheap ride.
I have read online that sometimes the "wafers" in the ignition get stuck, and that a tap with a rubber mallet while the key is in the ignition will solve the issue, even if temporarily. Anyone have experience with this? When I get home from work today, I am going to try this. Should I spray something like wd-40 inside the ignition in order to prevent this from happening again?
I have also read that the ignition cylinder fails alot in Wranglers. I am guessing that this will need to be replaced.

But can you get the key in the lock cylinder all the way, it just won't turn?

If so, it sounds like your ignition switch is probably completely seized, or your lock cylinder could be as well.

To be honest, I really didn't notice if it went in all the way, but I am going to give it a shot...
Don't know if this has been mentioned, but are you sure your steering wheel isn't in a locked position?. Have you tried moving the steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key?
The steering wheel moves freely, it definitely isn't that, though I wish it was as I suspect I will need a new ignition system..

Good news! Sprayed wd-40 in there, waited 10 minutes, started right up. Granted, I don't know if it is a temporary or long term fix, but at least it is working now! Thanks everyone for the input.

That seems to suggest your lock cylinder is going bad. Probably a good idea to think about replacing it at some point. Or perhaps it just needed to be cleaned / lubricated. It is a mechanical device, so it stands to reason it would need some lubrication once in a while.

I agree. I am going to keep it lubricated for now, but I am going to get it repaired ASAP!

Just had that problem and my wires turned out to be barely long enough to go into the terminals but they would come loose as the engine ran and pulled them out over the course of about two weeks. Happened because I was impatient and the positive and negative were swapped on the new battery. Picked up a kit from autozone that increased the length of the positive wires about six inches. Worked great. My symptoms were fast clicking when starting or no power at all. Turned out to be just a poor connection.
