I highly doubt it's an axle shaft, since they're still spinning the same speed as they were before. The only way it would be a bad axle shaft was if the gear installer somehow messed one up on removal and install. And yes, I would think the axle bearings/seals would be dead by now if that were the case.
Seeing as you have an Adams rear shaft and I have a bad rear Adams shaft (2 of them), I am very suspecting that the shaft is bad. More likely than something being wrong in the axle, anyways.
