Poorly Fitted Auto Custom Carpet

Isn't the mass backing similar to MLV? Does anyone have any specs as to how much mass backing is included in it?

As far as I understand it, what you're referring to as sound deadener, the adhesive sheets or tiles, is for eliminating resonance from the tub and sheet metal. It doesn't really do much to block noise coming from other sources like road noise.

That's what the MLV or mass backing is for, because the added mass is what absorbs and eliminates the noise coming into the cab. As far as MLV goes, I've only ever seen it in combination with a Closed Cell Foam layer, about 1/8" thick, between the MLV and sheet metal or body panels to decouple it from those and prevent the MLV from resonating with the sheet metal. Do you know what the underside of the ACC carpet is like, does it have anything like a foam layer to decouple it from the tub?
Imho you will get way more sound reduction - road noise included - from stick on sound deadener. Than you will with the mass backed stuff from acc. And if you want the killer combination Noico sells both stick on sound deadener and a much thicker stick on foam layer that @Chris used on his last Jeep.

I used second skin sound deadener. Heatshield and acc essex carpet. And i can only hear the engine when im passing. Road noise is greatly reduced. As much as you can with a soft top. It made a huge difference in interior sound from road, engine or anything else.

The acc has a normal carpet backing thats a semi clear glue of some kind that holds the carpet fibers.

The thing i have not asked. Is what do you use your Jeep for? And what are your goals for carpet and sound deadening?

If you get your Jeep wet inside regularly. Id skip all sound deadening and just go for bedrug. If its a daily driver that you want to sound deaden and not necessarily go mud bogging. Id get the thickest carpet you can. And as much effective sound deadener as possible.

Even if you go with bedrug. And want to be able to take it out. Id cut heat shield panels that fit under the carpet. It will stay well enough. But you could also tack it lightly to the underside of your bedrug. For greatly reduced heat in the cab.

Again, while you have it out, use some sort of heat shield. The stock carpet had some around the trans hump. But better stuff can be had for cheap.

Heres the post in my build thread detailing my sound deadening, heat shield and carpet. Sorry you have to click on images. But its worth it if you decide to go that route. There are also pics of the carpet. It definitely fit better than what yours is. Id call acc directly and ask their advice.

Bed rug 100%. The only cutting is outlined clearly for you to cut and is done because of people’s different setups.

Here are a series of pics of my install. We did this in one afternoon. The black is the sound deadener. The silver is heat shield. You lay the heat shield down and cut sections then seal the seams with included aluminum tape. It turns into one big sheet. That you could do in two sections front and rear of seats for easy extraction.

I dont have pics of the carpet fully finished. But it tucks under itself at the seams and turned out very nicely. The only area i want to put velcro in is the kick panels that run under and in front of doors. It sits exposing the wire bundle for the hardtop. But a couole pieces of self adhesive velcro will tuck that in.

Even the BedRug stuff requires cutting slits for the floor anchor points and seat belt bolts. That said, it's the only carpet replacement I use!
Thank you all so much for the input. Headed to FedEx soon to send back the items.

The underside on this is the "Mass Backing" which is a thick clear plastic-like layer. I did not order the foam, as I will be doing the close cell foam by Noico.

My tub interior looks a lot like yours with sound dampening material all over. The close cell foam should be here tomorrow. In the meantime, I'll install the UCF skid plates and drop off low quality carpet at FedEx for return to Rockauto.com

Thanks, I'll check out your thread. I'm a ways away from any full on audio builds and sound deadening, as I don't want to do it now and have to peel it all up for modifying the tub and building a cage.

So have you ever used MLV at all? It's been a while since I've looked into this stuff, but on the DIYMA forum it seemed the MLV was one of the key components to sound deadening, in addition to a thin layer of CCF to decouple it and prevent it from resonating with the panels, along with the adhesive sound deadener that prevents resonance. The MLV not being a replacement for sound deadener and vise versa.

From some quick reading, I found that 1/8" thick MLV weighs about 1lb per SQ ft and the 1/4" thick is 2lb per SQ ft. I'd be curious to see the weight difference between the regular ACC carpet kit and one with the mass backing.

I'm planning on going all out for my audio and sound/heat deadening with my build, but it's gotta be one of the very last phases since it kind of gets in the way of everything else

Ya. Sound deadening or sound insulating is a science. That can be researched and discussed adnauseum. Lol. I have not used mlv but i know what your talking about.

Two things.

One is the heat shield i used is rated for sound suppression as well. It has a foam layer sandwiched between foil of sorts. Between that and my rubber(?) backed extra thick carpet I think it ads a fair amount of mlv like sound deadening. On top of the second skin sound deadening tiles i put down.

But i have nothing to back that up with. Someone on here used a db meter to test before and after his install. But i dont recall his materials. I want to say it was Noicos sound deadener tiles and Noico MLV.

Second, is i think the noico stuff on amazon is very reasonably priced. If its the 80mil stuff it competes with all the majors ie second skin, dynamat etc. And has great reviews on this forum. I would recommend that. But second skin also sells "B" quality material at a large discount. I bought a box and could not tell the difference between it and their highend normal stuff.

Lastly i think your going to be perfectly happy with the bedrug. If your laying down sound deadener too. Thats a great base. And i will say the bedrug looks very good in person. My best friend just did his 70 gmc truck with it. He used my left overs to lay down sound deadener and heat shield under it. Hes putting in a complete wiring harness so no noise tests yet

I will say that between all the sound deadening it really did make a difference. Im very happy i did it.

Very sorry the acc did not work out for you.

I bought the complete ACC set for my LJ. It does not come in the quick install version. I had to do all the cutting and fitting. It took a couple hours to do. I'm happy with the end result.
I used my original carpet as a template.

I’m really sorry ACC’s product failed miserably. I had high hopes. I’ll either go with Bedrug next or get a decent used OEM carpet from eBay. UCF skid plates arrived soundly today. Antirock Sway Bar arrives tomorrow. Plenty to do, as my build slowly comes to an end.

Again, you all have been extremely instrumental in reaching my one-of-a-kind TJ.
