I’m slowly looking for a jeep LJ in my area and I missed a good deal on an 04 but was skeptical as I didn’t know what issues they had. I thought I read the 04 year was better than 05-06 with pcm problems. Can you tell me or share other post that talk about pcm or wiring harness problems I need to look out for on the LJ’s? I want an automatic this time around. If it needs rebuilding I’m game, I like a good challenge so I’m not scared of that.

Currently have a 98TJ since new and looking for another backup vehicle since new car insurance is to high in the state of Louisiana. I have decent mechanical skills and can work on them pretty easily.

Thanks

The PCM issue is overblown by some people. If it becomes a problem it is easily remedied by WranglerFix. Mine failed around 120k. At that time Mopar remans were still available and I've never had another problem. WrangleFix has an exceptional reputation, however, and I wouldn't hesitate to run one of his. The 42rle is the only available auto in the LJ. The .69 overdrive gearing can be frustrating to deal with. I have just become accustomed to turning off the overdrive manually. The other known problem for 05-06 was the OPDA. Again it is easily corrected with a Crown replacement. If looking at an 05-06 it would be worth checking if it has already been replaced. The OPDA on my 06 never failed but I did swap it just for preventive maintenance. I haven't heard of any issues with the wiring harnesses.
I wouldn't worry to much about finding an 04. That would seriously limit your selection. I would find the best LJ in your budget. There isn't much info on rebuilding the 42rle. If you ever do it many of us would really appreciate some documentation of the process.

Thanks, what is a OPDA? I got an older friend who would help me with a 42rle but I’m sure they have books out there to guide me.

One of the problems I'm seeing lately is Bestop is the only one left that makes a factory style (framed) top for it and their quality has taken a dive. I would advise finding one that already has the soft top frame, or get used to the idea of being stuck with frameless tops indefinitely.

I’ve had my 05 TJRU 6sp hardtop for 3 yrs. 114k miles.
Things that I had to do:
* Spark plugs and wires.
* Injector and fuel rail heatshield.
* Injectors, not really needed just because.
* Bosch fuel pump.
* Replaced drivers side seatbelt buckle.
* Upgraded to H-4 Hella headlights.
I did all the work myself. I’m very happy with my purchase and how it performs. Oil pump and computer issue blown out of proportion IMO. TJs of every year have their issues. They are all old Mopar pieces of crap.
Rather than year I would focus on quality of build, maintenance/abuse history and rust issues.

I want a hardtop, I’m over the soft tops, I’m fixing to repaint a used top I bought for my TJ after I do a few filler spots. I’m so burned out having a soft top and may never go back to one

If you need a replacement top, I go with one of the less expensive options because of Bestops issues.

I haven't found any that make one for the LJ. At least not a complete one. Mastertop makes a frameless but the reviews on theirs weren't any better.
