05 42RLE Transmission Cooler Lines

I had my exhaust out. I don't see any way you could do it without moving the exhaust.

I'm pretty good at sneaking the exhaust out by twisting, turning, tweaking etc. to get it over and around bits on the rear axle and I can see no way to get the trans cooler lines in without dropping the exhaust and I've tried.
 
Sadly I was kinda thinking that, just by the path of the lines. 🥹🥹 I have my rear main on my to-do list too.... Maybe I try and get the exhaust down and tackle that to. Bolt access on the exhaust is like zero too erghhh

Maybe my mechanic's method of cutting the lines and installing them in two halves wasn't so crazy after all. :unsure:

If you use some quality compression fittings, not the least bit crazy. I have used many Brennan brand from Royal Supply with zero issues. Not the coupling but -6 male to 3/8" tube in both steering pressure lines and trans hard lines. Not a single failure out of 100's.

something to consider... i may get more things out of the way later and see where i am at. Skid plate, maybe drive shaft too - just anything I am working around to make it easier. thanks for the input from everyone :-)

Yep...that's what he said....adding that these aren't high pressure lines so the chance of failure at the coupling is minimal. Not sure what brand of coupler he used.
 
feedback from Lines2Go....."mechanic thinks you need to disconnect the exhaust" 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ definitely what I was hoping to avoid.
 
if I ever have to replace my lines, I feel like I'm probably going to go with flex lines. Something like Evil Energy.

I cut and added compression fittings when I did my aux. trans. cooler.
6 years, no leaks.

If I had seen these I probably would have gone with those!

But - update: Was able to relatively easily disconnect the Y pipe portion which gave enough wiggle room to get the lines in. I disconnected my 02 sensors to get the wires around, but did not remove them. What worked for me was feeding from the transmission side, towards the front. I can't say it was pretty, and took them in and out 4 times because I was not sure it was right, but think its good to go. I ran out of Brakleen and wanted to clean everything up before making the connections, so that will come later in the week, fingers crossed should be good now.

@mrblaine thanks for the suggestion on pulling the mud skirt - gave a great line of sight for the exhaust. From that angle I looked through and used a socket on each bolt, barely able to move 1 or 2 teeth on the socket at a time, but slowly got them all out.

Side note - Anyone have a suggestion on good/better gloves?!? I've been using "Venom Steel 6 mil, 2 Layer "Rip Resistant"" ones and no lie went through 6 or 7 pairs just tonight!

Update to close this one out.... Once i disconnected the exhaust downpipes, I was able to twist and turn and slide and otherwise coerce the new lines into place. It wasn't the easiest, and was like a rubiks cube over and over, just upside down with rust falling in your face. But they are in! Having the mud skirt off was the only way I was able to get the exhaust disconnected. Even with wobble extensions, I was only able to get a good line on one of them and ended up just peering through over the frame and using a socket to get those bolts out, then back in. Not the most straight forward, but at least I no longer have transmission fluid dripping :-)

I find myself at the same crossroads. Do you know where your mechanic chose to make the cut and place the couplings?
I don't have any experience with SS Tubes....hopefully, others will chime in.

I had my mechanic install mine. He took an unorthodox approach to installing them so he didn't have to mess with the exhaust. He cut the lines into two pieces and then joined them back together with compression fittings. They've been leak free for about two years now. Not sure I'd recommend you try that at home! He's a bit of a maverick, but I always trust his work.

Do you know where he made the cut and positioned the couplings? I am at the same crossroads. Thanks

I can try to get a photo, but it was just forward (8-10 inches) of where the fittings go into the transmission.

I will be changing my lines but I'm also thinking of adding a cooler. The type of fittings you added to your lines would be great information.
