1997 Jeep TJ 4.0 with 32RH Automatic lost reverse.
No issues when driving forward. Smooth up shifts, smooth down shifts, No shudders what so ever.
Issue is when I drop the shifter into Reverse, I get nothing. I can hear a slightly different hum from
transmission but nothing that doesnt sound normal. I can rev the engine in reverse and it feels like
its in Neutral.
Jeep went back for a blow head gasket after I paid for a zero mile full engine rebuild. The engine ran sweet
and idled great after the re-build but for what ever reason, I was backing out of a garage and heard a poof and
then a engine stumbled and the CEL with misfire on cylinder 6. Compression showed 96 pounds and all other
cylinders were 140 so jeep went back to engine builder. Head gasket was blown on cylinder 6 and under warranty,
the garage checked the head after removal and could not find a reason why head gasket blew.
Sadly there were some serious health issues with shop owners wife and sadly a couple of days later the the head
mechanic/shop foreman passed away.
I waited patiently as the shop struggled to get back on there feet and finally after 4 months I got my jeep back.
To be on the safe side since the garage could not find a reason for blown gasket, they installed a brand new head and
the engine is running fine now. However while putting it back together the mechanic's helper broke the plastic clip on
the kick down cable and so they replaced it with a brand new one, again under warranty.
I was told reverse was no longer working when I went to picked up the Jeep and to be honest, I just wanted the jeep home
at this point. I also noticed how hard the throttle pedal was to push down as compared to before.
Got home and looked at it from beneath and could tell they poorly routed the cable around the selector rods from the lever.
I re-routed cable and now throttle pedal is as smooth and lite as it was before. Checked the shifter linkage to see if it was messed
with /adjusted and it is still covered in dirt and no one has disturbed it.
Checked fluid in neutral and at idle and it was about 1/2 quart low. Filled it up and I still cannot get the transmission to go into reverse.
Again when in drive and you push down on the throttle it kicks down without issue. No shuddering or slipping. Downshifts without issue.
