I bought a 97 Jeep with a junk 2.5l in it. I came with a good used 2.5. I tuned it up and changed the timing chain and installed it. Starts and idles fine but when you rev it up it go over about 1200 rpm and has a little backfire. Any ideas on where to start look for a issue?

One of the parts you replaced in the timing chain or tune up didn't work out. Start with the easy stuff and work your way back to the timing chain checking everything you touched. You probably did ignition stuff, pull and check all that. If you don't find anything I'd start to wonder if I got the chain aligned correctly.
My bet is the cam and crankshaft timing is now off from replacing the timing chain.
