2 hours from home and in limp mode

No MAF on a Jeep 4.0.

The cracked header is letting air into the exh which shows up as a lean condition.

You can disconnect the O2 sensor to force the PCM to use preprogrammed mixture data.

Of course, it will throw an O2 code when you do that.

Just to confirm, this would 100% make it go into limp mode, correct?

^^^Not sure, but that sure would! ^^^

Stick with the updated factory style that has bellows. Banks won't make a noticeable difference and is a lot harder to install.

No point of reference but the banks went on easy enough. I think it's less about the headers and more about the condition of your bolts.

If I did it again I'd paint and exhaust wrap the headers.

If I bought something other than Banks I probably buy the cheapies on Amazon...some folks said they're decent enough.

I did like the extra thick gasket the Banks came with and the beefy flanges.

It appears your 97 has the same type header and routing as my 92 YJ. The best header I found for it was the Borla, which is apparently out of production. It was a full length header with a larger crossover pipe which eliminated the choke point under the trans. The Wranglers were rated 10 HP less than the same engine in the Cherokee due to the restriction. I'm not sure if anyone makes a similar one now. I have about 150K mi on the Borla now.

I was kicking myself for not getting header wrap last time i put my banks on.its larger so there is less room to work under there.

I used it because the larger edelbrock exhaust ports needed larger primaries. And a stroker might actually benefit from it

Well my skepticism of mechanics was valid. They couldn't figure out what was wrong with it and didn't bother calling me. I eventually called them and despite them giving me an estimate for it and telling me that they could get it done this week, they apparently don't do exhaust work like that. So I got an appointment for a shop multiple other shops recommended just down the road on Friday. I would prefer to do it myself, but between classes starting this week and work I don't have a spare 4+ hours.
