2003 Wrangler cruise control install

My '03 doesn't have Cruise Control so I started researching how to get it. I found a post from earlier this year where someone was wanting to do his '04 ( https://wranglertjforum.com/threads...aftermarket-cruise-control.19096/#post-348640 ), but thought I would update for possible resources and my findings so far on my '03 Wrangler Sport.

A little background on the Wrangler - it was manufactured December of '02. 4.0l 6 cylinder.

I did go out and take pictures of the mysterious plug under the hood that was discussed in that and other threads on the topic -

In the picture above the plug can be seen in it's natural positioning with the red safety clip in the locking connector.

You can see the master cylinder in the background, and my hand is next to the alarm horn (self installed) and will likely have to move to mount cruise servo.

In looking in the parts manual for the 2003 Wrangler, it indicates a clock-spring in two different places, both with the same part number. 1st location is with the cruise system, 2nd is with the steering column assembly. At this point I will assume the correct clock-spring as I have found references in a number of other locations that this '03 has the correct one. I will advise once I tear into it.

As Chris mentioned, finding a new kit for installing cruise is near impossible. But I have found a source for most of the parts, and it turns out adding cruise to your Wrangler won't really be that hard on the pocketbook - YMMV.

Baseline4x4 ( http://www.baseline4x4.com/ ) has an eBay store where they sell the servo and steering wheel buttons for a (in my opinion) VERY reasonable price (<$100.00).

I've ordered my parts and will report back my findings, and hopefully it will be that I have cruise.
 
Got parts in the other day - servo and buttons.

All installed, cruise light on dash lights when I hit the On/Off button so I must have done something right up to that point.
Vacuum line hooked to servo - hopefully in the right place - off of an unused port of a tee which is fed from one of the 3 vacuum ports on the side of the intake manifold. That tee is in a line that feeds the HVAC controls as well as the vacuum reservoir under the battery.
Have also confirmed have the servo cable tightly connected to the throttle lever.

But it doesn't work. Got it out on the highway a couple of times - it won't set. Cruise light stays on.

Anyone have any thoughts on where to look/what to test?
 
Was able to play around with the servo today before it got too hot.

Pulled the servo off the Jeep. Took the two screws off the terminal cover to gain limited access to the inside of the servo. Pretty much all you can see is longer pins that connect with the outside world, a diode, and what looks to be 2-3 solenoids (diagram shows 3). Cant determine too much but one thing for certain - if there was anything fried in there I would have been able to tell.

I did get continuity between all the pins except for I believe it was between pins 2 and 3. Based on the circuit in the cruise kit install manual, I don't understand that as pins 1, 2, and 3 are all connected to 4 either directly or through a coil (which would be 2 coils in series, per the circuit).

I insured the pins were clean and reassembled/installed the servo. I applied mouth suction to the servo vacuum port. Nothing too exciting there - no flow was observed or movement of the diaphragm that can be moved back and forth by hand from the throttle cable end.

I started the engine and observed vacuum on the vacuum hose so must assume that to be good.

I cleaned the vehicle side plug real good with a couple of shots of carb cleaner, reinserted and confirmed properly locked in place with the red tab safety latch at the plug.

I reconfirmed the cruise lite comes on in the dash lights with the servo connected. It does not come on when the servo plug is disconnected.

I'll pull the air bag tomorrow to confirm p/n's of the steering wheel switches. They were sold to me as being used on '03-'06 models. Manufacture date on mine was December, 2002. It might have been manufactured in the middle of the steering wheel controls switch changeover as others have noted (especially since it didn't come with cruise although wired and clock-spring control was installed. May have been a late run steering wheel sub-assembly).
 
Update on my cruise retrofit -

Finally cooled off enough to go pull the air bag off the steering wheel and look at the steering wheel cruise button part numbers that were sold to me as being for a 2003-2004. They are - 56042310AC and 56042311AC. MoparPartsGiant.com says it should be 5GY38DX9AA and 5GY39DX9AA (only one of those two numbers indicated in the parts list that I have). I've found where the 560 numbers ending in AD superseded the 5GY's. DOn't know if that makes much of a difference.
Baseline4X4, where i bought the servo and buttons from, indicated they had to get the PCM flashed on a (I think it was) a JK. But I've read nothing of the sort on any of the boards I've been on.

Anyone have any ideas?
 
My understanding is that 97-00 switches are different than 01-06 switches. Visually they look the same, and they'll plug-in without issue on any year. However, my thought is that the electronics themselves inside the switch must be different in some way (i.e. different resistances or something).

However, now that I think about it, if your cruise control light is on when you turn the switch on, that seems to suggest that the buttons are working. I'd probably look at the servo next. There aren't many parts in this system to go wrong. It's usually either the switches or the servo (or a fuse), but your cruise light goes on, so now I'm thinking servo.
 
Thanks Chris! I was thinking servo too, and Sunday pulled it out to look it over. I had read where someone had a similar issue and found the electrical pins inside the servo were corroded, and after he cleaned them up, all was good. I did that while it was off Sunday, even though the connections really were not that bad.

I've got a background in electronics so I kind-of know what to look for. Inside the servo there look to be 3 solenoids and a diode. The diode is to prevent back emf from the solenoid coils when they are de-energized from taking out the control transistor in the PCM. Looking at the circuit in the dealer installation manual for the cruise kit shows the circuiting of the switches along with how the various resistors are arranged to achieve the different functions. Plus - they don't give the resistances so it makes it hard to test or confirm any differences between part numbers.

I did measure between the pins on the servo. I didn't do any analysis as I didn't want to try to overthink it to much. The parts are all potted so I pretty much did noting more than confirm continuity between the pins.

I also did a suck test on the vacuum port of the servo. It was dead headed - but I didn't attempt applying power to the pins to see if it would open up (that my be my next test unless someone comes up with another brainstorm). I also tested that I had vacuum on the hose as we PM's about the other day. I do.

I think I'll head out and put my OBDII scanner on it. I read somewhere that someone said some scanners can read the CC module.
Edit: Well, my Foxwell scanner can't see the CC module in the PCM, assuming there is one.

Edit II: The plot thickens! A little Google search finds me a Mopar supersedes table -

5GY38DX9AA is superseded by 56042310AC, which is superseded by 56042310AD. So it's looking like something else is the problem. I might have to dig deeper into the servo electronics. :-( Same is true for the other button set.

I think I've figured it out -

Just to be certain, I pulled the brake light switch out and checked it per the Jeep shop manual (brake light is a 3 pole switch that one of the poles tells the PCM to kill the cruise when the brakes are hit). All OK there.

I then went back to the servo - I pulled it out of the Jeep and using a 9 volt radio battery, I randomly applied voltage to various pins, forward and reverse directions. You can hear the solenoids click inside the servo for most pin selections. When a solenoid clicked, I applied mouth vacuum and got flow thru, but no diaphragm movement. I did this with all configurations of solenoid engagement and could never get the diaphragm to move.
I decided mouth vacuum may not be enough, so hooked it up to engine vacuum. Still no movement of the diaphragm, not even a slight twitch.

So, off to get with my Seller and see if they will replace it.

The saga continues -

Got another servo and cable in the mail yesterday, installed this morning. Still doesn't work.

Any guru's out there who can tell me if there needs to be a setting changed in the ECM? And if so, what resources do I need to get changed (i.e. type of scanner, take to a dealer, take to a good? mechanic, etc., etc..).

To refresh -

1) cruise light comes on, so I know switches are talking to the the ECM as the ECM drives the cruise light.
2) Air bag was removed again and steering wheel switch p/n's were compared to the parts list, and to a "supersede by" parts list that I have found.
3) Vacuum line is connected.
4) Car side connector was cleaned and all terminals look to be in tact.
5) Car side connector has a red safety tab, and it is inserted - insuring to me that the connector is fully seated.

The guy's I got my first servo from said on a different model Jeep it takes an ECM change. But I replied to them that based on everything I was reading (this board and elsewhere) that as long as the right clockspring and steering wheel switches are installed, it should work.

Anybody?

Nope - too many honey-do’s have gotten the way so I have not messed with it. I did replace the (have forgotten the correct term) turn signal lever/emergency flasher assembly (hazard light relay buzzes when energized) in hopes there might be a connection between the two.
