2004 LJ Auto transmission

I believe that I have the 4 speed 42RLE auto trans.
Seems to work okay until shifting from 3rd to 4th.
It shifts from 3rd to 4th in less than a second.
It's like having no 3rd gear at all.
It has always worked this way so never questioned it.
But is there a way to adjust the transmission to make it stay
in 3rd gear a bit longer?
When it shifts from 2nd to 4th, it really loads the engine.

I don't believe there are any adjustments that can be made, but you can turn overdrive off.

I've just gotten used to turning off the overdrive as soon as I start the Jeep. If I get on the highway I might switch it back on. For city driving I just leave it off.
