4.0 lifter tick

ok so I've spent hours reading threads, on forums, watching videos on the classic lifter tick and i have read so many different things some same try engine restore some say try sea foam or marvel mystery oil , other also say don't run synthetic oil witch i just change my oil last week with Pennzoil 10w30 full synthetic and I'm now regretting no trying just normal oil and seeing if that works if anybody has any results on anything that can help the noise I would love to know what I can do to make it a little quieter or all around go away

Marvel Mystery oil will supposedly cure most lifter tick. Short of doing headwork and replacing the lifters along with it, that is the only thing that I think will truly work.

Most additives or things I've tried were meant to be used prior to an oil change. I've used a pint of straight diesel, Marvels Mystery Oil, and a few other things successfully over the years. I just dumped it into the engine, let the engine idle about 30 minutes, and then change oil.

I'd be interested in what others have used that didn't require an oil change.

ok cool ill have to give it a try on my next oil change, I'm planning on eventually replacing my lifters but that's down the road

They both worked. IIRC, MMO smells like diesel to me, but with a few extra ingredients.

I've used Marvel for over ten years at every oil change. Still had tick but not always. What solved it for me was making sure I used the right viscosity oil (compensate for the 1 qt of thin Marvel) and making sure I used a zinc additive. Even now, if have valve tick sometimes but only for a few seconds on cold start.

Edit: To be clear I change my oil every 3000-4000 miles with synthetic blend.

I put it in with the new oil in replacement of 1 qt of motor oil. Leave it there until the next oil change. I've run full synthetic before but I think most people agree that synthetic blend is better.

Even with synthetic blend I've had ticks that would go away with strait dino oil.
Every time I get a new machine with an engine I always try and do a complete fluids change-out. If the engine oil looks gunky or there is some strange ticking I drain the old oil out, replace with new (dino) oil and filter. If the tick doesn't clear up shortly then I add around a qt of diesel to the engine. For around 15-20 minutes. Light load when it warms up. Then drain all the oil out. If it looks particularly clumpy I'll do the same flush again.
Old engines need their zinc for them to live a long life. So I try and add a qt of diesel engine oil to keep internals happy. Not over fill, just swap out 1 qt normal oil for 1 qt diesel oil. I did have a Dodge 318 that would tick like a typewriter without having a qt or so of Marvel's in the crankcase.

I bought my 2001 Wrangler Sport new and ran Castrol Full Synthetic 10W-30 oil for the first 50,000 miles and had no tick whatsoever. Switched to Castrol/Valvoline High Mileage Blend 10W-30 (around 50,000) only to stop my RMS from seeping a small amount of oil and it worked. Maybe just coincidence but seems like my tick started about the same time I removed my IAC to clean and replace.? I only hear my brief tick (1-2 seconds) when temps drop below 60 degrees...NEVER during warmer periods even at first start. I've read where carbon build-up could possibly cause some ticking but looks like it would tick regardless of outside temps? I haven't tried any additives but my next oil change I will try some dino 10W-30 oil.

I was able to quiet mine down with a bottle of Rislone engine treatment and a fresh oil change of dino oil.

Mine is noticeable until it gets warmed up, but probably just because I'm listening for it.

After changing what I assume was dino oil to a high mileage synth blend I drove it to work, no issues. Started it up to drive home and it had a very loud tick. By the time I got out and popped the hood it went away. Never came back. Weird.

May try some MMO next change. I just assumed a bit of ticking was normal with this engine.
