I'm running 4.88's with 35" tires and a 5-speed manual. No complaints. I'm sure on steep grades I may be downshifting to 4th a little sooner, but I can run freeway speeds without issues. For better gearing on serious off road situations it seems that your transfer case gear ratio is the real game changer. Unfortunately for those of us non-rubicon owners its an expensive upgrade to say the least. After driving one with an Atlas, I have serious envy issues.
