42RLE transmission cooler and temp gauge recommendation

Hey guys! First post. 2003 Tj with auto transmission. Looses some power on very hot days when being driven a bunch and it’s been suggested to me to get a transmission cooler and temp gauge. I’ve seen the write up on the Derale but wondering if that is the one to get or are others just as good. Also what gauge would you suggest and where to put it? Thanks!

Get a gauge first and put the sensor in the pan. The gauge will tell you if you need to get a cooler. Not to mention if you do end up getting a cooler you'll have something to compare temperatures with, a baseline. Most people put the gauge just ahead of the transfer case shift lever. Get whatever gauge you like. You will see temperatures between 120-230 if that helps you pick (hopefully not that high). Nothing outside this range is really useful.

My opinion is that if you live where it gets warm it's hardly ever a bad idea to install an aux transmission cooler since heat is an automatic transmission's worst enemy.

I installed a B&M temperature gauge into the console in front of the shifter since it doesn't need to be at eye-level. Its sender is in the pan itself.

This is a tuffy console but I did the same thing with my previous TJ's factory console.

Nice Location Jerry! Since i have the tub off the frame, i'm going to install a fin cooler up front and a trans temp gauge similar to your setup.

I put a Hayden cooler behind the grille, on the U shaped brace. It lowered my temps SIGNIFICANTLY. On days when it was over 100F here, I had been pushing 220F. After the cooler I've never seen it over 160F. We had a cold snap around Christmas time here, down in the low 20's and I was actually concerned that there wasn't enough heat in the fluid. I don't even know if that's a thing, but it probably is at some point.

Anyway, +100 on installing the gauge first. Otherwise you won't know what effect the cooler had. I used a Glowshift, mainly because I liked the looks and the price was nice. I've had zero issues.
