They aren't pushing it, and it's not at all necessary. It's a helpful supplement. You can use all of the radios features just using the in dash display, but doing things like time alignment and adjusting crossovers is certainly easier with a smart phone screen. I'm no fan of things requiring apps to work, and there are plenty of times I get in my jeep and don't even take my phone out of my pocket, but it's really nice to have a quality touch screen on my dash sometimes.

FYI to the Original Poster, I did end up getting and installing that cheap amazon Radio.
So far happy with it. Not the fastest device but the wired android auto works just fine and keeps my phone charging.
I did have to notch a little of the plastic to make it fit.

I have a Boss 10" single din and I love it. It has a removable screen for security and Android Auto which I made wireless, with a wireless toggle. The screen slides up and down, so you can position it to not block the air vents, but is so firm that it almost requires two hands to move it. I brought a small carry bag for the screen in case in end up parked in seedy parts of town.
