Hey guys, I have a 97 TJ 4.0l. 2 weeks ago the check engine light came on, pulled the codes and showed misfire on all 6 cylinders & ignition coil. Replaced the ignition coil. plugs, cap and button. check engine light is off now but while driving yesterday the jeep stuttered almost shut off and then went back to running. I was seeing what may cause this issue, possibly the Crank Shaft Position Sensor?

I'm getting very occasional misfires on my 97. All six just like you. Seems to happen most when I lug the engine. I've replaced everything but the crank position sensor.

Don't discount looking over the wiring. I'm pulling my harness before I throw more money at sensors. So far I haven't any wiring issues in place.

Not sure the Mopar is available.

I have looked over the wiring and nothing really stood out to me. Wouldn't hurt to look a little harder.

I'd be leaning towards the crankshaft position sensor as a possible cause. If you replace it don't go with a store brand like Duralast from AutoZone, go with the best quality you can find... Mopar if you can find one.

And I think the correct, new part number is 68407888AA. The old number was discontinued.

Well I figured I'd join the OP and pony up and buy one... don't order from this place...

I too had the same problem with my 97. It would also randomly shut off, and occasionally not want to hot start.
I used a NAPA crank sensor and the symptoms disappeared. The NAPA unit was about $90 a year ago.

Yes, I am having the same problems. I had to go with the NAPA sensor as well, I will be installing it tonight. Hopefully it will take care of the problem.

OK, changed the Crankshaft position sensor. It seemed to help started right up and didnt stall out any. I did get to my work on some rougher roads and i did get some lagging and picked right back up running good. I popped the hood and noticed my negative terminal on the battery was so loose i could just slide it on and off. I am guessing thats what may have caused the lagging.

Update, I have been driving my jeep everyday for about 2 weeks now. Drove roughly 100 miles Saturday jeep ran great , got into it Sunday fired up and died. Tried starting it several times. after about 5 attempts it started up and ran fine. Drove down the road to the store, got back in and done the same thing would turn over but would not start. Finally got it started ran fine back home. No codes are showing, Any ideas?

Obviously check that negative battery cable since you already know it had been loose. But if you changed the crank position sensor and things improved, but then regressed, I would be suspicious of wiring and/or grounds, especially in that area.
