I know there are many forums about this but little to no affirmative solutions.
My 1998 TJ got parked for a few months, and then poof! The gauges only work some of the time.
They turn on when you start it, and run for 15-20 seconds then cut out. Then they come back for a few seconds and repeat.
I’ve found that I can get them to shut off if I rev the engine above idle, and as soon as it’s back down it turns back on.
Here’s what I’ve done so far-
-I pulled the cluster out and cleaned the pins and “twisted pin” method.
-Checked as many grounds as I could find.(I’m sure there are many more to check)
-Replaced the ignition switch.
-Replaced the throttle body position sensor
-pulled the wiring harness behind the dash and made sure the two wires are twisted together (some sort of induction solution jeep used)
I talked with an old timer and he said to check if there is too much voltage being fed into the cluster causing it to shut off.(the thought is that there might be a bad resistor somewhere causing it to feed too much power) I do not know what pins are supposed to have what voltages.
Also does anyone know how the PCM grounds? There are two sheet metal screws that go into the body and hold it up, and they are fairly corroded. I’ve been curious if that could be an issue.
My buddy has a 2001 TJ and I’m thinking about swapping out our clusters to verify if mine is working properly before buying one.
