Looking at options for a rear locker. New to this so I'm not sure of all the ways to go. All I really know is an air locker or E locker and I'm still not sure how those install.

I have a Detroit locker in mine. You don’t control when it is engaged or disengaged like you do with the air or E lockers. I really like it and haven’t had any issues on or off road.

Which rear axle do you have, the Dana 35 or Dana 44? Will anyone be driving your Jeep beside you? What size tires do you run?

Define affordable... Lincoln Lockers ftw.

Oh.. and Jerry's questions are important to best determine the locker for you. Also.. are you driving in snow.. offroad.. etc?

33in BFG-ATs on a "Dana 44 without trutrac". 5.5 in lift. I am the only driver so far. It would be rare if someone else drove it.

It'd be real tough to beat the Detroit Locker then. After a day or two to learn how it likes to be driven, it's the best behaved automatic locker available. Not to mention strong, reliable, and pretty much bulletproof. I had one in my previous TJ (stolen) and I still miss its awesomeness on the trail. Point and shoot. :)

Ya, I'm really liking the detroit locker option. The fact that you recommend it even make is that much more of a better option. What's the different between a Detroit Locker and Detroit Locker Trutrac.

There's no such thing as a Detroit Locker Truetrac. There's a Detroit Locker and there's a Detroit Truetrac which is a limited slip differential... it's not a locker.

Jumping in another Thread that you happen to be on Jerry. To refresh your memory, 2004, LJ 4.0 Auto with OD on 35" tires. I plan on going 5.13 gears like you strongly suggested and will go with a Torq Auto Locker in the front. I don't go to Big Bear in the snow and if I did I wouldn't plan on engaging 4wd.
I wanted to keep my factory LSD in the 44 and save some money for a future locker to see if I find myself in places needing a real locker. Can I still use my factory LSD? I believe so with thick gears and I imagine 5.13 gears come thick since 4.88's do but I figured you would know. Thanks in advance Jerry

Yes your factory Tracloc LSD will still be usable providing its clutch pack hasn't been worn out by now. Its clutch pack typically only lasts 45-50k miles. Yes you can get thick gears up to 5.38, Revolution Gear has them. Good decision on the 5.13. :)

Guess I'll find out if the LSD has been worn out when I re-gear. Thanks Jerry!

Not likely, you can't see if the clutch pack is worn out during a regearing. The Tracloc has to be taken apart if you want to examine its clutch pack.

Oh wow, that’s unfortunate. Well, it’s working now. So either hope it still does for a while or?? Suggestions Jerry? Not a hardcore wheeler but some of my group is. I also considered the Detroit Truetrac.

You can't tell if the clutch pack is worn out or not when driving around. If your TJ has over 45-50k miles on it you can pretty much guarantee the clutch pack is worn out. If it is worn out I'd rather replace it with something else than pay the parts & labor cost to rebuild it.

The Truetrac is gear-based so it has no clutch pack to wear out. Though unless you want to drive on icy/snow covered roads in Big Bear etc. I don't see the benefit for you living here in SoCal like you and I both do.

So leave it in until I decide if need a full locker or take it out? I did the wheel test and seems to still work now.
