Ok, newbie here.
So, I'm one of those guys that used to ask why every five seconds about everything because I'm curious. Its struck once again. I was window shopping for a camshaft, not saying I'm doing one, just curious as to what there is out there for the 4.0. Naturally I checked out comp cams website and they have I believe 3 or 4 different cams. Now I also saw that they go in a 4.0L from 98 and older. I understand that the newer engines have a thrust plate for the cams, and the older engines have a spring and pin. But, the timing covers are the same I believe (could be wrong), and from the info I've seen the lifters are the same too? (Also could be wrong.) But do the cams really only go to 98 due to the spring and pin instead of the thrust plate or is there something I'm missing? And if that's really all that's different, say someone was determined to really change the camshaft in a new engine, computer problems and all aside, strictly just a performance camshaft going into a newer engine, couldn't you just down grade to a pin and spring rather than a thrust plate? Since the timing cover is the same, or you could even get the correct timing cover if they're not the same. Really this is all just speculation for my peace of mind and wonder. Just curious as to if anyone here has put a performance Cam in a 99 and newer engine. There has to be someone out there that has. And PLEASE don't be that guy that completely side tracks the question and says "Not worth it just swap the engine or stroke it, not worth the money" please, and much appreciate for all input
