I’m just curious if anyone has ever used airbags for a variable lift on their tj. If so what were the expenses and challenges.

I have them to offset the extra weight I carry, it can jack up the rear but I wouldn't use it just for that. For 1" it might work fine but anything more I'd look at the correct springs. They aren't that expensive and you really need the correct shocks to match anyway.
Variable lift heights don't work well when adjustments to the steering and drive lines are directly related to the final ride height. Shock performance is also directly related to the final ride height.
It fucks with your toe and caster, there is a disabled Veteran who wanted to do this so he could in and out of his jeep, I think we finally talked him through a few of the problems bu he was only lowering to get in and out, not driving. Tim
