I know this has been discussed on here before and I’ve searched for similar threads and it seems there are a lot of gremlins in the NV3550 transmissions but I want to be sure and specific its the transmission before I drop the $ on a reman and find out it’s something else.
It started with an occasional squeaking which would happen intermittently and then I noticed a rumbling vibration which was more noticeable when under load but yet it didn’t do it all the time.
My first thought was universals but the rumbling made me think a wheel bearing was bad which neither made sense because it just didn’t do it all the time. I checked the Driveshafts for play and they seemed fine. The way it would rumble I figured if a U-joint was bad it would have been pretty obvious.
It then started making this whining sound in reverse but again didn’t do it every time.
Now I have a whining when I downshift and it’s really noticeable in 4th and 3rd.
I tried to listen to the rears but to me it sounds like it’s coming from the transmission.
I tried with the help of a couple mechanic friends of mine to pinpoint the sound and they seem to think it’s at the transmission also.
I don’t know if it matters but my Jeep also has 2” Teraflex spacers on top of the springs.
My question is is this a fairly common problem I’m experiencing or should I be looking at something else?
