It would be interesting to know when it became a one way road. I've heard that once a year, there is an up hill run. I also recall reading that it was closed for several decades after the mining declined. 1940-50's maybe?

A friend of my dad's ran BBP in the mid-60s in a cj3a. This was presumably before many of the "modern improvements" where made. The way he tells it, it was just another road, similar to how we talk about it now.
