Are BBB industries rebuilt steering gear boxes on Rockauto any good?

Never heard of BBB. They must be a new supplier on Rockauto.

Lares is supposed to be a decent box, plus it has a lifetime warranty.
Rockauto shows out of stock, but you can buy elsewhere.

Part#1353 is correct for your jeep.

FWIW.... stay away from anyone offering to sell you a Cardone box. Cardone is the worst remanufacturer of anything.

Thank you! If anyone can second this (from personal experience) I’ll go ahead and order the lares unit from oreilly and save some money!

Ive been through 5 steering boxes on my 98. 2 were Cardone trash. Lifetime warranty but so the fuck what?
As simple a swap as it is, who wants to do this more than once? Garbage in, garbage out.
Unfortunately, all remanufactured from core boxes are suspect and prone to failure. Redhead,Blue-whatever are remanufactured using cores.
Those with more knowledge (@mrblaine) will tell you that there are limited viable cores for our gearbox and it's kind of a crapshoot finding one that will last.
I got so fed up with steering issues stemming from the gearbox that I bought the only one I could find that was actually a completely new product.
It's been tighter and tougher than it was expensive (Really).
It has held up much better than anything else so far and I have the option to add hydraulic steering projects if I ever get bored 😝

How many miles have you put on the PSC unit? Is this the one your running? Did you need to modify things or did it bolt right up? Website says "this part custom fits your vehicle".....trying to figure out what "custom fits" means lol

I'm not sure if you've ordered or not yet, and I've not used this so cant give you input....but Lares also has part 11353 which they say is a 100% brand new version of the 1353. They also have 11430 which is 100% brand new parts but with a heavy duty thicker input shaft (not sure if other parts in it are heavy duty or not). Thier site lists the 11430 as being a replacement for a TJ (97-2002) but that it requires a different ujoint to connect box input shaft to the steering shaft. http://catalog.larescorp.com/select/Jeep/Wrangler/1999/

Looks like the same model I ordered through Summit. I ordered a few quarts of the recommended Swepco fluid along with it.
I've driven around 3500 miles after installing it with roughly 5% of that being Colorado trails. It is a direct replacement for the early TJ Saginaw box.

I appreciate the reply, yea I ended up ordering a redhead unit after not being able to find a Lares unit in stock anywhere.

I bought a reman box from NAPA that had the same amount of play in it as the original, plus it rusted really fast and I'm unimpressed. Anyone know if theirs are just cardone rebranded? I think I might end up replacing it again and going with redhead

BBB are not bad. I have one on my 2004 Rubicon. They are substituting a different design.

Yea, my redhead just came in today, haven installed it yet but its completely painted so it wont rust. That and I’ve only read good things about them

Mine from NAPA was only around $120 so it was worth a gamble, but I know to avoid them now. Redhead looks like the best option without spending a ton of money on PSC

Update: Redhead installed today, absolutely no play at all and smooth as butter (at least for the short ~5 miles it was driven today)! I didn’t count how many times I had to steer it back and forth to purge it completely, but it sure seemed like a good many more than 20 (just and fyi) before starting it up and doing it a good many times with the engine runnning (as instructed).

Dang it’s nice to have crisp steering!!

I think that will be my plan, once I 100% confirm that the play is coming from the box not the splines of the pitman arm or something. I might try tightening the allen bolt on my crappy NAPA box first if I'm already replacing it, I figure the worst that happens is it wears it out early but it shouldn't matter if it's being replaced

I’m about to get new steering box and pump, is the Lars 1353 the one I want?
