Are these axles usable?

I acquired these a long time ago, they were claimed to be Dana 44 chromoly axles. I don’t see any stamp or other marking on them that says 4340 or whatever but I also don’t know where to look. If they’re not chromoly then nothing else matters, I’ll ignore these pieces of useless steel.

Which brings me to issue #2, which is that they’ve got surface rust on them. I was able to knock most of it back with a nylon bristle wheel, but I do see it leaving scratch marks on the shaft so I’m not gonna do that on the bearing surface (any more than I already have).

Given the condition, are these salvageable/usable?

What do the hub faces look like?

That seal surface looks really rough. Can you speedy sleeve them?

That seal surface looks like poo you need to take some emery cloth to it and see what it looks like. To ID the shaft look on the edge of the flange and the face for any numbers.
