Arizona Rock Crawler

You probably also weren't breaking axle shafts and losing beads before the flip either ;) When you say steering you mean bending your tie rod or the drag link?

Tie rod at least twice. Drag link seems fine.

I’m thinking my 20 ton shop press was a great investment for this reason alone. When I got home I noticed the tie rod I got had the slightest bend in it. Put it in the press and straight as an arrow now!

Currie steering on. Just waiting for the flip knuckle to arrive from Blaine and she will be flip ready!

What is there to gain by flipping the tie-rod? If it’s for clearance purpose, doesn’t it seem to cancel itself out with the drag-link not being flipped as well?

The clearance is gained on the drivers side only. However much higher the top of the knuckle is than the bottom plus a tie rod width is how much clearance is gained.

Look at the drag link and then imagine if the tie rod were on the other side of the knuckle. It's 85-90% of the way to a full flip.

How can it cancel itself out when the majority of the draglink is above the bottom of the axle tube? When you flip the left side which moves the tie rod up, the bottom of the tie rod is about even with the TOP of the axle tube and parallel to it all the way across.

No, the clearance is gained all the way across the entire tie rod to where it connects to the draglink.
Makes sense. As of right now the tie rod slopes down from the drag link end to the drivers knuckle. Does the tie rod sit level once it’s flipped? Seems to make more sense for it to be flipped aesthetically as well. I suppose the factory didn’t make them flipped since the TRE would hit factory wheels?

I was basing it on his picture. His picture had me thinking the angle of the tie rod was a little more flat than what it really is. After seeing some pictures of the flip, I can see the benefit of things. It really does bring the tie-rod a good ways up.

It really does. When you first think about it it only seems like it will increase clearance by the height of the knuckle from bottom to top mount but it’s really that distance plus the diameter of a tie rod. Which in the Curries case is pretty thick! Without measuring it looks like it will bring things up a little more than 2””? Correct me if I’m wrong Blaine.

I don't do numbers.

Got the tie rod flipped! The old knuckle was a pain in the ass to get off with my whimpy hammer so I rode my bike to get a 4 lb hammer and then it came off in 2 hits. So far so good. Now time to cycle suspension and make sure nothing hits. I am going to push my front axle as far forward as I can while I’m at it to prepare for 35s

Well I cycled and everything fit perfect. Tight but perfect. So Im not gonna mess with the control arms right now. Just want to get her ready to wheel Sunday! Hopefully with @Chris and his new Jeep. The bottom of the tie rod now sits parallel to the top of the axle tube. Pretty amazing!
