Going to upgrade to an Atlas transfer case in the next few weeks. Probably going to stick with the 2 speed unless you guys wind up convincing me to go with the4 speed. I am currently running the terraflex terra low 4:1 in a 231 with an sye and extra large hd chain kit. I’ve got 5.13 gears in the axles as well. No problem with it. But I want to upgrade before there is. I’ve gone larger tires etc. since installing. and also want the ability to have 2 low and just front dig etc. my questions are if I order the one for the current ax-15 and swap to the 32RH auto in the future as is the plan can I use the same transfer case without issue. Or should I do the auto swap first? Second is anyone using the atlas in there Tj. I’m leaning toward the cable shift set up to make install easier as well as smoother shifting. With the stock engine and trans. Is it worth the upgrade to the hardened output shafts. Does the 4.0produce enough power and torque to warrant the cost? Leaning towards the 4.3:1 unless I go 4 speed then I am leaning toward the 8.? Final low gearing box. Any thoughts or ideas/ help from people that have one or have researched it. I just started looking at them today as I saved a bunch on my hydro assist steering kit by finding a nearly new used set up and this was next on the list.

Talked with AA and they kinda talked me out of the upgraded hardened shafts since it’s the 4.0L motor and talked me out of the cable shifters as they require more main to adjust or so they say. I switched to a cable shifter on my 231. But that saves money so who am I to complain. They even have pretty much talked me into sticking with the 2 speed. And talked me into sticking with the 1310 ujoints as the fuseable link so to say in the drivetrain. Even gave me a great price with shipping that beats everything I’ve seen to date price wise. Still have not made the final decision but they were very helpful on the phone. Great customer service.

Great advice from AA, Also know that you don't want the Atlas gearing to be as low for the 32RH as is required for the AX-15. I'd be (and am) happy with a 4:1 with a 32RH or any other automatic.

Sounds like AA angered all your questions then? Whenever I have a question AA related, I always give Vic Carroll a call. Very nice guy, always willing to talk, won't try to "up-sell" you, and gives great advice.

Also, for what it's worth, I'm an AA dealer, so I can get people better prices than you'll find listed anywhere on anything from AA. Of course if you spoke to AA directly, I'm sure they gave you a good price anyways!

Messaged you for a quote if you don’t mind. I’m ready to buy one. Still torn between the 2 and 4 speed though

Thanks for the heads up on the Auto. I know it’s pretty forgiving to gearing. Do you think my 5.13’s would be an issue with the 3speed auto?

On my '03 TJ I run the, 4.0/NV3550/Atlas 5.1-2Sp./Dana 60/44 4.88's on 37's.
Linkage shift, no cable. 32 spline output shafts (blue oil seals), 1310's.
98:1 crawl ratio. With the torque of the 4.0, I just let the clutch out and crawl. When I bump up to a large rock, there is no stopping it. If I need to stop, I either push the clutch in or turn the key off.
If I shift into 2 wheel low (rear only), I can stand on the brake pedal and make the front tires skid on pavement.
I will never convert it to an automatic, absolutely hate them.

So you are really glad you went the 5:1 or do you sometimes wish you had gone 4.3? I’ve got the 4:1 now but am wanting the 2 low and dig.

Had a similar setup to what you currently have. 4.0/NV3550/Teralow 4:1/4.88's. Last January at the Winter 4x4 Jamboree in St. George, UT i smoked the planetary thrust washers. Teraflex no longer has parts for the Teralow, so the rest of the 231 became a parts donor to a friend who also runs a Teralow. If yours still runs, you should be able to sell it for a decent amount. I had multiple people asking if I was selling it until they found out it was smoked.

I talked with Mike Partridge at EJS, and told me a lot of the same things they told you on the phone. (Linkage shifters, 4.3 ratio, 1310 u-joints, etc.) I ordered a Trail Series T-Case in late April and got it late June.

Regarding the AX-15 swap to 32RH, the biggest deal you'd run into is if you had to swap input gears. Not a huge deal either way, I personally wouldn't wait to swap an atlas in until the trans swap is done.

Cable vs. Linkage- I like the look of the shifter setup better with the cable shifters with the knobs side by side and the actual shift pattern. The cable and linkage shifters shift pattern are reversed from each other. Since they recommended the linkage shifters to me, I went with those. They do fit nicely in the stock location in the console. I'm happy with the linkage.

Hardend output shafts- I don't remember seeing an option for hardened shafts when I ordered. I went with the Trail Series case, I assume that means that they are not the hardened units.

I stuck with the 2-speed because of price and DS lengths. I asked them about 5.0 vs 4.3 and they told me 4.3. I can see where the 5.0 can come in handy, but wouldn't have changed anything if the Teralow didn't go on the spazz. For the type of wheeling I do, I am happy with the 4.3.

It took me 1 day to install the Atlas at a leisurely pace. Probably could have been done faster, but didn't want to rush. FWIW, I really like the sight tube feature, its worth the extra few pennies to get it.

The Atlas was already installed in the Jeep when I won it in a raffle. The trails I like are perfect for the 5:1. I came from a '73 FJ-40 with a stock T-case and 3-speed. I swapped in 4-speed from a later model Cruiser. But it still seemed too fast in low range.
And your 5.13's will be a great combo with the 4.3 Atlas.
In low range fifth gear, I top out at about 12 mph. If I need to catch up to the group I wheel with, I just shift on the fly to high range second or third gear.
And x2 with that sight tube.
Oh and btw, I've got a 1" body & mm lift, and I didn't need to clearance the tub when I installed a Nth* tummy tuck.
