I have a 1998 Jeep TJ with a 2.5 4 cylinder 5 speed manual I think ax-15. It has about 150,000 miles on it. I do not have very much history with her because I have only owned her about 3 weeks. The point is she has been running great in all gears. Until one afternoon when I got ready to leave she would not go in reverse. It would not go reverse in all other gear fine.It is like something is blocking it. I took it to some pro transmission guy they suggest rebuilding or buying one rebuilt and let them install. Please give me your pros and cons

Does it grind when trying to shift to R? Whith mo prior indicator it could be as simple as a piece of rust, rock, etc. Got wedged up by the shifter. Could also be the shift fork popped out. Not an AX5 expert, just a lot of stupid things have gone over the years to various vehicles.
But just to add ... I'd ditch the shop that said to buy a new one for them to install. Any even half decent shop would want to actually find out what the problem is and not just have you give them your credit card for no reason. It could be a $10 part. And a 10 min fix.
I have a 97 TJ with the 2.5 and AX5 transmission. last year October time frame I switch to redline MD 90 fluid. It would occasionally have difficulty going into reverse. When this happened I would shift to second gear and then it normally would slip into reverse. Just lining up the internal synchros is all that I was doing. I hope that is all you need to do because that is all that really can be done to your current transmission.
You should give this a try I think I read somewhere also where they will shift into first then into reverse and that will make it easier.

Still on the tranny problem won't go in reverse. Does anyone have an idea of how much a rebuilt Ax5 in or around Nashville T N. Rebuild or buy Rebuilt how much labor should be.involved.

I ended up buying a remanufacted transmission from a place in Tallahassee Florida. They ship. There is one guy there that rebuilds the jeep (asian) manual transmissions. 750.00 before shiping. I have had mine 6 months and not one issue. I replaced rear main seal, a LUK clutch, national throwout bearing and timkin pilot bearing. Close to 1000 bucks total. I did all the work myself.

Is it getting hard to shift into other gears, especially 1st? Mine did this and it ended up being the clutch fork spring. 176k miles on mine when it went. A $2 part but you gotta drop the trans to get to it. Did the rear main seal, clutch plate and flywheel while in there (part of a rebuild anyway).
