Back in the day

If anyone wonders were my intense hatred of body work comes from I restored the 1964 Scout with my dad when I was 14 and hand sanded it about 4 times. The following year we did the then new CJs motor, stuffed in a Crower cam with heavier valve springs, Edelbrock SP2P intake, Holley 650 4bbl, Hooker long tube headers and a heavy duty clutch. The Cherokee S got the same motor treatment the following summer and the CJ got Detroit lockers front and rear and a new heavier duty 4speed.

Here's my first car, a 1976 Dodge Aspen. I got it for free in 1982. When new it was the exact bottom of the line of what was made. It had to be ordered because dealers never had cars like that on their lots. Slant six (great engine), 3 speed manual + overdrive, dog dish hubcaps, crank windows and no AC. It started out that way because the guy who gave it to me always bought the cheapest car then drove it for about 6 to 8 years while doing nothing except changing the oil. I ended up with it because it was so rusty the wiring harness started smoking under the hood with the headlights on. My dad and I fixed it up. I had it for about a year until I drank too many beers, hit a guardrail and got a DWI (Driving While Intoxicated). This picture is after it got a new front bumper,fender and headlight and I was forced to sell it to learn my lesson. Someone about 25 miles away bought it and I didn't see it again for almost 3 years until someone I didn't even know in my town bought it to drive to work.

I didn't like them at the time but my dad thought those full hubcaps would help the sale. They were rescued from our neighbor's 1968 Coronet 440 which was on it's way to the junkyard because the trunk lid was having trouble holding down the cement blocks that were in there to hold down the leaf springs that broke through the floor. A least a couple of them were still on it when I saw it again. IIRC, they were both on the same side.

A year after that I bought a 1973 Beetle that some added fiberglass rear fenders with 4" wide flares and tires on some kind of "mags". Luckily it didn't stay like that too long. It might have been somewhat ugly with 4 square "headlights" but here's my home built Baja Bug with a full roll cage and Jackman Wheels. The Plymouth Duster rockers were added by my dad, they never came off but they didn't look anywhere near that tall/thick after a couple trips off road.

I love to see that you family wheel and how it made such good memories. I need to find a spot to make a family wheeling trip. Right now my 4 year old boy is my wheeling buddy but it's just day trips. The ladies freak out about stuff too much lol. I think a dunes strip once I get a car trailer would be awesome.

Back in 1976 my friend and I were out pig hunting in my 1974 CJ-5. We ran down and caught this little pig, took his picture and let him go (picture of my friend). My CJ-5 was my daily driver, 258 straight 6 with a 4 speed and 3:73s. I paid $383.00 for that winch, brand new right out of "Mountain Roads" off road store.

Man, there are some beautiful pictures in this thread.

I really miss the paint style of older Jeeps from the 70s/80s Jeeps. New cars look so dull in comparison.
