Trying to figure out if it's my alternator or battery that's starting to fail. I know I can get my battery tested for free at O'Reilly's, but would prefer to be able to diagnose stuff like that at home. Is a battery tester worth it and if so any recommendations?

A battery tester aka a load tester will read your battery voltage and you alternator output as well, the Harbor freight version should suffice for home use. A multi meter would be better for checking electrical issues on other areas of the vehicle.
