Battery tray question

I'm finally removing the fenders and I found something that wasn't on my 2001 Jeep SE when the fenders were removed on that one.

There is a vacuum hose going to a box that is under the battery tray on my 2004 SE. What is it, and what does it do?

That box is the vacuum reservoir, it provides a limited amount of vacuum when the engine isn't running. Your 2001 had one when it left the factory.
