Belt slip squeal

Hi all,

Had the typical belt squeal recently. Belt wasn't in the best condition so assumed that was the issue. Since then, I've replaced the belt (Dayco) - correct size, the idler pulley, and the tensioner and it's still squealing. Alignment looks fine, tension is good, I cleaned all the grove pulleys and no luck. Pretty sure it's a slippage issue, because the water trick kills the noise instantly until it dries out. But after all my research, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what else it could be.

It starts at idle, and gets faster as your rev - but not louder. Nothing I change on the dash from an electrical or aircon standpoint change anything and all the pulleys spin fine by hand when the belt isn't on.

Any thoughts to narrow down what the issue could be would be a great help!

How's the crank pulley look? Rubber core so they're pretty much gone at this point if they're original.

Does it squeal more if you put an electrical load on it ? , blower , A/C , lights , wipers ?

x2 on the crank pully. I had a similar issue on my last jeep, I started hearing a squeal and though it was the belt. Few days after replacing I started to accelerate and blew out the Crank pully. After replacing with same new belt and a new crank pully squeal was gone. in my case, I bet the belt was never the issue to begin with.

The belt needs an insane amount of tension. Try one of these

Thanks for the replies all. It's been sitting for a while whilst life took over! Squeal is no louder when there's an electrical load on it.

But, I think you're probably right Mac, the TJ is completely stock so would imagine the crank pulley is original and maybe not in the best condition. Doesn't look shocking though from what I can see - but it seems to be the next obvious thing to replace.

My TJ is automatic and I've seen on YouTube a guy put some rope into the cylinder to stop the piston compressing so the engine locks and you can remove the centre bolt - is that typically the easiest and best way to do it? I'll probably replace the front crank seal too - any thing else worth considering taking a look at whilst it's all off?

I just spun mine off with an impact gun with it in gear. Benefits of a manual transmission.

Finally got round to replacing the crank pulley - Mac, Tronner, you called it - bit of a pain to replace, but that was the issue. No squeal now. Thanks for the advice.

Crown Auto. Ironically, I could only get them shipped from the states.
The only thing I couldn’t find anywhere was a new bolt and spacer - so I’ve had to clean up and reuse the old one. Hopefully that will be ok, and will keep my eyes peeled if I see any (that don’t involve a £50/$70 shipping fee!)
