Best muffler for a quiet rumble

Definitely add in a flex coupler to prevent the manifold from cracking, it really helps on the 97-99 4.0L engines.

As far as exhaust, a larger Magnaflow muffler has a deep rumble without being too loud. The Thrush Hush muffler mentioned above is a turbo style muffler. Dynomax makes a "super turbo" catback kit for the TJ that will sound very similar. I had that kit on my XJ and it was nice and tame, a bit deeper than stock with a nice idle.

From someone who's been thru a handful of cracked exhaust manifolds, I took a different approach. My theory is that part of the problem lies with the sheer weight of the manifold. I don't think the stock exhaust hangers are positioned properly to support the lower half of the manifold when combined with the large crossover pipe. I added a solid mount and supported it off the bell housing. I was replacing cracked manifolds every couple years. I've had this one for 5+ years now and it's still holding on.

Hey @jeepguy03 ,

I know this is old, but I'm wondering if you can say more about this. I had a cracked manifold back in 2003, when my '97 was much younger. Haven't had trouble with it since, but your commend got me thinking. Is this a well-known issue for the early year TJs? If so I might want to do this.
