Interested in picking up a knife or two for when I hit the trails. What do you recommend as good starter knives to have without breaking the bank for a casual owner?
I own over 20 Kabar knives, I've been collecting and using them for a decade.My favorite is the bk22, which is a bk2 that comes with a different sheath.The 5" blade is more practical for most tasks and it has the thickest, strongest blade.
You can't go wrong with any of them though.The Potbelly knives are a really good bargain, they come with a piggyback knife that is really handy and the pocket on the sheath is big enough to hold a altoid can survival kit.
The standard USMC fighting knife is also like a bucket list item, if you like leather don't hesitate to try one.
I just sharpen them with a leather strop like a straight razor, it's all they usually need unless you abuse them.Knives Plus makes a really good strop that comes preloaded with 3000 grit polishing compound.
