Broken Harmonic Balancer

Don't know the best course of action here so just testing the waters. The harmonic balancer on the rear of the transfer case has broken off and it is just the inside portion of it left. Wondering if it's worth fixing since the jeep is completely stock right now and won't be lifting it for a while. I can't seem to find any local shops that agree on how or if its easily just fixed. Would just like some advice on whether its worth fixing or doing am sye kit that eliminates that part of transfer case but would probably also need adjustable control arms. Just trying to find best course of action

Hi Nikolas,

How did you notice that the balancer fell apart? Did you feel vibrations that were not there before? In my opinion, if you have no drive line vibrations as a result of the balancer's failure you can just leave it alone or remove it all together. If you do get vibrations, I feel that replacing the balancer might not be the best route, in case you decide to change the jeep specs later. I would probably get the SYE kit and adjustable rear upper control arms.

I am not sure what is the purpose as I do not think all TJ's came with it. My cousin's LJ did not have it and it is a 2004 my 06 TJ had it until I replace the driveshaft and added the slip-yoke eliminator. It was a royal pain the the but to remove it. I'd says it you have not noticed any vibes just leave it be. Maybe someone else will chime in who has more knowledge on this.

I searched the web with no success as to why some models do and others do not have the harmonic balancer. Though the technical function of the balancer is clear, it is not clear why some TJs have it and others do not. I decided to ask Chrysler. Hopefully we will get an answer.

I have ended up doing an sye to fix it. Thanks for the advice from everyone. to answer a few questions it came off during the previous owner's ownership and it was causing some vibrations while driving since it came off. He didn't know why it came off and the shop that took it off the driveshaft cause it was just rattling around didn't even know what it was and they were a Mopar shop.

I'd sure steer clear of THAT shop in the future.
