Bump Stop Question

I was taking my old springs out and found this. Did the PO already install bump stops in between the jounce bumper and the post? Can someone confirm if this is what happened and should I leave them and install the new springs or take them out and go through the process of putting in new bump stops down on the pad? It is like this front and back.

From what I have read, it should be on the pad for the front. Just got mine in the mail today.

It looks like about a three inch extension on it. What size springs are you installing? The extensions they send with spring kits are usually longer then really needed. Dig around on this site to see how to get to the knat's ass on the extension length. You basically lift the tires, one at a time without springs till you get interference, measure the distance between the cup and spring base, add a little and that's you extension length. It's a little more involved than my description but you get the idea.

The bump stops are 2” on all 4 corners. I will take them off, cycle the suspension and make new ones. Thanks for the help. I was reading Unlimitedlj04 post on this topic. Does anyone know why he leaves the bottom of the shock unbolted?

I don't know why he leaves the bottom of the shock unbolted. If you are identifying the required bump stop extension for an existing setup, including the shocks, then leave the shocks installed. Tires, as well.

As far as extending from above or below, the end result is the same. The problem with extending too much from above is that there comes a point when the cup will pluck the coils as the axle moves. That is why the fronts are recommended to be extended from below.

To further elaborate, it isn't a bad idea to split the extension between the top and the bottom in order to reduce the leverage from having one very long extension. This matters more in the rear.

I am going to pull them out, cycle the suspension and install the correct size on the bottom pad. I noticed the springs were getting caught on the jounce cup.
