Buyer Beware

I've always been pretty lucky with shipping. Never gotten anything smashed up. Hell, I don't think I've ever even received something that wasn't working out of the box. Amazon did ship me socks instead of some textbooks one time, so that was interesting.

I collect old sewing machines. Packing a sewing machine so it doesn't get destroyed in shipping is NOT easy, and its very difficult to convince sellers to pack them the right way - even if you offer to pay more. Cast iron is brittle, and it weighs a LOT, and if it doesn't get outright broken, it will smash and destroy the fragile wooden base - unless they're shipped SEPARATELY and packed the right way. I just spent several months restoring a wooden base that got smashed to Hell, and only then did I notice a part broken off of the related machine itself. Fortunately, the broken part doesn't affect operation nor is it visible in normal operating mode - but the machine is a bit of a unicorn, and I'm not happy about this...

About fifteen years ago, I bought a new windshield for my Rambler Marlin. They are nigh impossible to find, and yet I was able to locate a vendor in Brazil (IIRC) that had three of them. Very expensive, but new, and in stock. It travelled all that way, and got within 15 feet of my front door when the delivery guy dropped it. I heard the "crack" from where I stood. The driver got all wide-eyed, and proceeded to open the box. There it was, split right down the center of the windshield. He looks up at me, and then asked (I kid you, not), "I don't suppose you want it, now..."

I refused delivery, and immediately got on the phone to order the $550 replacement. Unfortunately, the other two they had in stock had already sold. Sometimes, ya just can't win.

Don’t get me started with people let a lone a business not packaging items correctly. More than 2 months ago I took my mountain bike to UPS(biggest mistake) to be packaged and shipped by them. UPS put my mountain bike in a box with no packaging material what so ever and I paid for packaging material. My bike was cracked(carbon fiber) from the upper chainstay and had scratches all over the bicycle. I insured my package for 2k. Filed my claim and literally just now UPS called me saying my claim has been approved. I’ll never do business with UPS again.

One of my pet peeves with UPS is they want paid or they don't ship. File a claim, takes 4-8 weeks to get paid. My account rep was not happy when I told him I wanted to pay him 8 weeks from now for crap I ship now.
